30 Year Old Career Changer

Hi!

I'm looking for some advice regarding career changers wanting to get into consulting. I am 30 years old and my work experience is relatively eclectic - it includes military experience, geopolitical intelligence analysis, and public relations. I want to be applying as a generalist consultant (not as a consultant for any of the industries I've previously worked in) but am relatively unclear as to the appropriate route. Technically I am a grad, with a bachelors and a masters, but would I be accepted onto a grad scheme if I graduated from my last degree around four years ago? I really don't mind starting from the beginning and am looking for the best advice to get my foot in the door.

Thanks, and all the best!

It does look like Consultant role for you - make sure to network to get a firm answer from the firm!

Hi Reuben,

Is your grad degree an MBA?

Your years of work and experience and also type of work matters into the level at which you will likely be considered for. Based on actual individuals i've seen at BCG, those with ~8-10 years of experience in private/public sector typically join at the Consultant level (post-MBA role).

Other than the role to apply for - it's way more important to focus on networking, building up your application strength as well as starting to practice for the interviews - plenty of existing threads and articles on those here.

All the best!

Hi Benjamin! Thanks so much for you help. My grad degree is not an MBA, its in Conflict & Diplomacy. An MBA is something that I've been considering. If I'm coming into consulting with no typical business experience per se (of course I have transferrable skills) would it be recommended to apply for an MBA? All the best!

Hi Reuben,

thanks for sharing.

In general, in terms of age, years of experience, you'd typically not calibrate with the (grad) entry level at most firms but a more senior consultant role (e.g. Senior Associate / Consultant BCG).

Hard to give specific advice on the path though - how the firms look at your profile depends on various factors..

  1. Your school & academic record
  2. Exact previous work experience / nature of the work
  3. Geography
  4. etc etc

Feel free to reach out via DM and share your resume, happy to take a quick look and share some more tailored thoughts on how you should approach this.

Hope this helps.

Regards, Andi

With that level of experience you're likely to be applying for consultant level role.

Hi Reuben,

Q: Technically I am a grad, with a bachelors and a masters, but would I be accepted onto a grad scheme if I graduated from my last degree around four years ago?

If you have 5+ years of work experience you could be eligible for an Associate (McKinsey) / Consultant (BGC/Bain) role. If that's the case, I would recommend applying for that role. If they don't find it suitable, they will most likely move the application to a different role.

Good luck!

Francesco

Hi Reuben!

Your background shouldn't be a liability. It should be an asset.

In short, this transition is totally doable, you just need a good strategy for it.

Below you'll find a guide that tackles exactly this in a detailed manner, and specifically tailored to the current economic period.

Aside from this, what would be most important in your case is how you position your personal story. Ideally it would work in such a way that consulting is the next natural step in your career. Get expert support if you feel you are struggling with putting this story together in a coherent manner.

Best,
Cristian

Hi Reuben,

With that much work experience, you should be well-positioned to apply for an Associate role (i.e., not entry level, but the position people typically come in at post-MBA). However, as you start going through the recruiting process, you can also have a conversation about this with HR, who can help you select an appropriate role given your professional experience.
