Transferring McKinsey Home Office: Denver —> San Francisco or Silicon Valley

Does anyone at McKinsey have experience transferring home offices? I’m a consultant currently based in the Denver office but I’m trying to move to the SF Bay Area - my partner lives there and the long distance has been draining. I have a background in large cap plant operations and engineering.

Any guidance on how likely it is I might be able to make that happen, how to initiate that, how long it might take me, any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi there,

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your question:

  • First of all, unfortunately, no one can tell you how likely it is until you try and see the result. However, changing office is a standard process and nothing to worry about.
  • Moreover, I would highly advise you to frame your request from both a personal perspective (your partner situation) and a business perspective (how your background fits with the needs of the SF market). While the personal reasons are usually the strongest and will be taken very seriously, it can still be helpful to show that you will be equally sought after in the new office.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on your specific situation, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Hi there,

I transferred offices for BCG in Germany. The way this worked for me was to get in contact with HR (can be with your local team) and ask for the specific requirements. Might be more tricky in the US because they treat the regions more independently but she should be able to give you an idea.

Generally, both offices / systems need to agree, i.e., there needs to be a pull from the receiving office (networking helps a lot) and your home office needs to let you go (if they are fully booked, it might get tricky).

Best,
Sebastian

Hi there!

How to approach this and your chances of success will depend on several factors, some specific to you and others not.

To give you actionable advice, I would have to better understand your specific situation. Feel free to book time to talk through.

Specific to you:

1. Your tenure

2. Your performance (ratings)

3. Network with influencers in SF and Denver

4. Your experience (what you mention should be an ok fit with SF office)

5. Reason for request (very helpful that it is family related)

General:

A. Demand for consultants in SF (and Denver) in general

B. Demand for a specific skillset

Cheers,

Andreas

Hi there,

It is possible but it requires a bit of work, esp. at a junior level.

  • You need partners in the target office to support the move
  • You need partners in the home office to support the move

Target office:

Network, try to help out with internal projects, get staffed on their projects, develop a reputation and state your intentions → that can help with the pull.

Home office:

This is trickier. You need to state your intentions early in with the people you work with, your mentors, and HR. Try to build goodwill over time and make them see your perspective.

I know several people who transferred out of their home office/country within the first year.

All the best,

Florian

I’ve sponsored several McKinsey colleagues for office transfers. Two key factors to focus on:

1. Your network at the target office. They need to advocate for your transfer, so build strong connections—especially at the partner and senior partner level if you don’t already have them.

2. Support from your local office. If you work with a specific practice or group of partners, share your transfer case with them. They will ultimately need to buy into your move, which may require doing some favors or extra work to build goodwill.

Send me a message if you have any questions—happy to guide you through the process.

Best,

Alberto

Hey there ?,

Totally understandable—and the good news is: McKinsey does support internal transfers between offices, including from Denver to SF/Silicon Valley, especially when there's a personal reason like family involved.

? How to approach it:

– Start by speaking to your PD (Professional Development) Manager and share your reasons openly—personal + professional
– Express your long-term commitment to the firm and interest in building client exposure in the Bay Area (especially with your ops/engineering background—it’s quite relevant)
– Be flexible: they might ask you to staff on a few SF-based projects first before formalizing the move

Transfers can take anywhere from 2–6 months, depending on staffing demand and capacity. The more you can show how your skillset fits the SF office’s client needs, the smoother it will go.

Let me know if you'd like help framing the outreach—I’d be happy to support you on this move ?

Best,
Alessa ?
