Salary disparities among regions at tier1 and tier 2 companies

I noticed something really weird. I checked glassdoor for consulting salaries at well known firms I noticed that salaries are almost 2to 5 percentage max 10 percent for the same position in the USA in LMIC like India and Egypt . Is that true ? And if it is this really frustrating

Hey there

Yes, what you’ve noticed is unfortunately true and a common frustration. Salaries in consulting and many other industries are typically adjusted based on local cost of living and market norms, not on a global standard, even for the same roles at the same firms. So a consultant at McKinsey in India or Egypt may earn significantly less than one in the US, despite similar hours and expectations.

It is seen as unfair, especially in a globally interconnected world, but business firms claim it's a matter of purchasing power and local wage structures. Having said that, skills have no frontiers, and if you are mobile, relocation sometime may close the gap.

Happy to assist you with a coaching if you'd like to talk over your possibilities or get advice on how to present your profile

Thanks for your reply . Cost of living does not justify the weird difference . What is happening I guess they check the average salaries which include millions of people who live below poverty line either living on tiny government assistance programs for unemployment. Also like what you have said market norms top talents with no international exposure accept those offers as this is the best they can get in their countries. Some people have family obligations which make them choose to stay home , others are not aware they can get a job at another international office .
One firm I have spoken to head of global talent expressing that I am open for relocation , she was so nice and she really liked my profile but she referred me to the local office .
I am not sure if firms prefer local recruitment coz it is cheaper. I’m open to relocation. I would love to work at any office in Seattle , or any company in Oregon . I’m not sure how feasible is that ? Thanks again for your time

Yes, that is frustrating.

It will be even more frustrating when you will be staffed on international teams and working with people at the same seniority who are pain significantly more than you.

But unfortunately, you can't do much about it. At least not at the moment.

Cost of living does influence the disposable income that people have though. In that sense, I know lots of people who have high incomes in consulting but because of where they live and how they spend it acutally put aside a lot less than people who make significantly less than them.

Cristian

US salaries can be up to 2x (or more) compared to other regions.

Why? Two big reasons: higher cost of living and clients with deeper pockets.

Willingness to pay defines how much firms can afford to pay you—and in some geographies, clients pay a premium.

Alberto

I lived in the USA for 2 years and I believe 2x is not weird , but what I noticed on glassdoor is that salaries are 10 to 50 x this is why I believed it is weird . The 2x premium is totally justified no complains but 20 x is unfair and unjustified. As I am new to this marker trying to shift from U.N. consulting sector I want to know roughly how many Xs is that premium I can not live with 1/ 10-50 times what my peers are making just coz I was born in different spot on the planet . I want to know the real salary expectations to take informed decision either by sticking to my U.N. consulting career if the shift would make me work harder and earn less in my country or explore the relocation options if it is feasible . Thanks for your input
