Mckinsey´s Solve Game

Hi there

Tomorrow I´ll do McKinsey’s solve game, and I realized that I´m going to have 3 games instead of two because the email says that the total time is 110 min. I think the third game is the Sea Wolf, but there are not so many videos on YouTube about that, so I do not know exactly what to expect and how to pass it. Can please someone give me some tips to succeed this third game?

Thanks in advance!

You CAN make it! | xMckinsey | 1.5h session | +200 sessions |Free 20-Minute Call

Hi Dani!
You have to identify the microbes that will clean the ocean in 2-3 locations. The process is the following: (1) select two characteristics (out of 7) that will guide your final selection. (2) Categorize 10 microbes that will be provided to you. (3) Choose 4 microbes from 12. (4) Identify the 3 final microbes recommended for the site. (5) Confirm whether a specific group of microbes should be allocated to the second/third location.

Best,
Mari

Hi Daniela,

Q: I do not know exactly what to expect and how to pass it. Can please someone give me some tips to succeed this third game?

You will have 5 major steps in Sea Wolf game, for 3 sites. In the last version of the game, the 3 sites need to be completed in 30 minutes:

  1. To begin with, you need to select 2 attributes from a total of 7 to assist with your final microbe decision.
  2. Next, you are required to categorize 10 microbes that will be given to you.
  3. Following that, you must choose 4 microbes from a total of 12 options available.
  4. Then, you should identify the 3 final microbes that you need for the site.
  5. Lastly, for 2 of the 3 sites, you will need to verify whether a specific group of microbes should be assigned to the following.

A few tips:

  1. Use excel for the microbe decision – it will speed up the math calculations
  2. Allocate 10 minutes to each site - otherwise you will run out of time for your last one
  3. Leverage the untimed breaks between sites to recharge

We have included already Sea Wolf (also called Ocean Treatment in the past) in the McKinsey Solve Combo with 8 new videos and prep material. If you want to prepare further you can find it below:

Good luck!

Hi there,

Basically, what Francesco said!

A few thoughts:

  • Using and Excel sheet is really important to organize your thoughts in a transparent manner - also helps with making quick chances.
  • Sometimes it's not that clear and you need to balance interdependencies - keep that in mind when aiming for the "perfect solution."
  • Some people I talked to reported that the final instance of the game became surprisingly much easier than the first two instances.

All the best,

Florian

Hey there ?,

Yes, you’re absolutely right—if your Solve Game is 110 minutes, that means you’ll likely have 3 games, including the Sea Wolf (a.k.a. Ocean Cleanup) ??

Here’s what to expect and how to do well:

? What is Sea Wolf?
You’ll be shown multiple ocean sites and need to decide which microbe combinations are best suited to clean up each one. It’s a logic + pattern matching game that also tests your ability to work with ambiguous data and multiple variables.

? Tips to succeed
Take notes as you test microbe combinations—write down which traits work well for which site
– Look for patterns between microbe traits (like resistance or growth rate) and site characteristics
Balance all traits, not just one—you’ll often need to trade off
– You won’t have “right answers” given, so it’s about consistent logic and testing
– Stay calm and don’t overthink—they’re measuring your problem-solving process more than perfection

Let me know if you want help reviewing your approach after the game—I’m cheering for you! ?✨

Best,
Alessa ?
