McKinsey Procurement TEI Experience

Just gave procurement TEI, and it was not that great.

A little background: I do have not that much experience in procurement, but I went on a job-seeking streak a few days back and applied for a procurement job (of course, adding a few keywords). Surprisingly, I got a call from HR, and after that, they scheduled a one-hour TEI with an expert.

Now within 25 min, only the person realized I have limited knowledge of procurement and asked me if I might be interested in supply chain networks (which is my expertise), somehow, I dragged through the rest of the interview and cases, but in the end confessed to him that supply chain networks are my expertise. Now he told me McKinsey has another team and will try to see if I can be recruited there instead of procurement.

Now I am expecting a rejection for this procurement position (will be surprised if they proceed), but do you think that other supply chain jobs will come in my direction? Any ban period or something that will impact me?

PS: The job was for McKinsey Client Capabilities Network. Also not sure what the ban policy is for roles like this, the role was knowledge analyst.

Its great that you realized the interview was not going well and offered up your real area of expertise. I think this situation is a bit tricky and depends on a few things

1. If there are actual current roles that match your profile and the interviewer was able to refer you then you should be fine and may receive a call back soon.

2. If no roles are currently available, you may get a rejection plus temporary ban. In my experience for expert roles the ban is not that important as the hiring is based on need and your knowledge/skillset and the number of applicants that meet this criteria is not that high. If there is a job that matches your expertise you can always reach out to HR and ask at that time for an interview.

All the best,

Udayan

It seems that you will be invited to interview for a different role. Unlikely to get a rejection on your interview, but to be honest, that's more about "paperwork" than anything else... what matters is that you may get an interview that suits you as a candidate.

I doubt they will have ban period for these kind of roles, although if there was an issue with fit that could be a possibility.

You should be fine and not face any ban. Nice job on being honest. Yes, you may not proceed for this role but stay in touch with the interviewer and recruiter to apply for the other CCN roles that are a better fit. There are a lot of different expert roles at McK so they will be happy to interview you, in my experience.

Based on what you’ve shared, it seems like McKinsey is open to moving your application toward the supply chain expert position. Be mindful that Client Capabilities Network (CCN) roles are non-client facing and come with different career paths, salaries, and benefits compared to consultant roles. Make sure to discuss all these details with HR.

Best,

Alberto

Hi there,

Given how the interview went (not great but also open and transparent about where you would fit best), I would guess that you will restart the process with the other team.

Keeping my fingers crossed!

Reach out for help or check out the McKinsey specific articles and cases on my profile.

Cheers,

Florian

Hey there,

McKinsey's Client Capabilities Network (CCN) is different from their consulting function, so I don't think if there was a ban that it would apply to consulting roles but rather to similar roles within

My general best practice advice is that for questions and issues of eligibility - please speak with recruiting to get the most accurate answers

All the best

Hey there ?, it sounds like your interview didn’t go as expected for the procurement role, but the fact that the interviewer proactively mentioned the supply chain networks team is actually a positive sign—it means they see potential in your profile.

For ban periods, McKinsey typically applies a 1-2 year reapplication policy for standard consulting roles, but in Client Capabilities Network (CCN) or Knowledge Analyst roles, the policy can be more flexible since they hire for specific expertise. If the team believes you're a strong fit elsewhere, they may internally transfer your application without requiring you to wait.

I’d recommend following up with HR to express interest in the supply chain networks role, reinforcing your expertise and enthusiasm. If procurement rejects you but the supply chain team is interested, they might fast-track you into that process.

So while rejection for procurement seems likely, it doesn’t necessarily mean the door is closed—especially if you position yourself well for the right team. Stay proactive and keep an open line with HR!

Best, Alessa ?

Hi there!

do you think that other supply chain jobs will come in my direction?
I would be proactive and reach out to HR explaining the situation and asking a referral for this interviewer, if possible.

Any ban period or something that will impact me?

If you have not been rejected, but rather redirected to a different role, I don’t think so.

Good luck!

Mari
