McKinsey Germany working hours 2024

Hello all,

Can someone share their experiences what the typical McKinsey working hours as Associate are nowadays? I heard pre-Covid was rough with 60-70h weeks, but that times have changed and that projects tend to be performed remotely without much traveling. Is this true?

hey!

  • McKinsey's working hours as an Associate can still be intense, typically ranging from ~60-70 hours per week, definitively depending on the project, team, and industry (e.g., some industries like banking / some functions as restructuring are known to be more intense)
  • While remote work has reduced travel, it often leads to longer hours since the time that used to be spent traveling is now used for additional work. E.g., on Thursdays, there is more time to work in the evening since there is no travel from the client to your home office!
  • This is based on my personal experience, and the exact hours can of course vary!! It is always difficult to state an average across diverse projects :)

Hope that helps :)

Hi there,

The overall time and effort have not really changed.

  • It's still a lot and averages around 60-65 hours per week
  • There is a large variety across projects, industries, clients, and even within projects across different weeks (55 - 75ish)
  • Travel might be less for some projects but exactly the same for others

Consider that less travel does not automatically mean a better lifestyle.

If you work from home, you have all the downsides of not traveling (taking care of food, admin, and your home yourself) while missing out on the perks of traveling (team room banter and camaraderie, team dinners and events, support, not having to care about anything but work, collecting air miles and hotel points for future vacations). On top of that, traveling represents some sort of downtime. With less travel, you are now expected to work instead, leading to longer hours. Travel also nicely separates work from leisure.

If you want to learn more, I wrote the book about how to perform well as an MBB consultant and manage your work-life balance well. It also includes an overview of the typical weeks, tasks, and everything that comes with it.

It's called Consulting Career Secrets and it's on Amazon.

Cheers,

Florian
