Hi,

A quantitative metric or resource that is driven by some need or use would always take into consideration the total amount of work/effort to be done and what work each unit of this resource could achieve.

Market sizing is also a test of business judgment, so remember to include relevant factors that could affect the work/effort, for e.g. in this case the maximum # of flights a pilot can take based on safety standards

Hi there,

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your question:

  • First of all, can you please provide a proposal that I can review?
  • Moreover, please keep in mind that most major strategy consulting firms have not used standalone market size estimations for a long time. While this does not mean it never happens, this type of case study question may not be very meaningful for both the candidate and interviewer, as only a few skills are being tested.
  • That being said, simpler market size estimations may still be a part of a case study, for instance when estimating the revenues of the client company is required.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to best prepare for your upcoming interviews, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Hi there,

This is all about defining the question better.

Are we looking at one flight per day, several flights per day for one airline, or all flights for all airlines? This will impact the magnitude of the final answer significantly.

Once you have clarified this, come up with some simple assumptions:

  • 1 short-haul flight needs 2 pilots
  • Pilots can work 4 of these flights per day (2x back and forth)
  • They work 5/7 days per week

Once you have the supply fixed, you can then figure out what's needed based on the demand (which you clarified in the first step).

Cheers,

Florian
