Limbo in decision process

I finished my R2 2 weeks ago and I just got a call from my Round 2 interviewer stating that due to my office's competitiveness, there cannot give me a decision until they finish the entire recruiting process by around end of January. I just would like to know on what would this mean, whether I have a chance still or is it really up to how the other remaining candidates perform? Would love to hear your thoughts on the matter.

Hi there,

First of all, congratulations on the getting through the entire application process!

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your question:

  • First of all, as you have been told and as you have said, it depends on how many candidates outperform you and how many open positions there are. So while you definitely have a realistic chance of landing one of them, you do not have it yet.
  • Moreover, and contrary to what other coaches have said, it has unfortunately become a more common concept to evaluate candidates not only in absolute terms but also in relative terms.

You can find more on this topic here: How to deal with a rejection from a consulting company.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on your specific situation, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Hey there,

You're definitely still in the running. What this usually means is that there are limited spots and the Firm wants to complete the interviews of all candidates and do a calibration to award final offers.

So let's hope for the best!

Hey!

It's understandable to feel uncertain in this situation, but the fact that they reached out to communicate this indicates you're still in the running. This likely means your performance was strong, but they need to finalize decisions based on the full pool of candidates due to limited spots. While it’s partly dependent on how others perform, being kept in the process is a positive sign. Use the time to prepare for potential next steps or consider alternative opportunities as a backup—staying flexible is always a good strategy! 😊

Hello!

There is definitely still a chance to move forward given no clear yes/no from them yet.

In the meantime, I would suggest to continue applying for other positions you're interested in, as it would ease the stress regarding the outcome of this process and potentially give you options to choose from if you have multiple offers.

Best,

Maria

Hi there,

This is a bit of an unusual situation as for most firms/offices its about who can pass the bar and not a competition.

In your case, it seems to solely depend on the others' performance HOWEVER if you did well you should have good chances and at least another shot in 6 months if they decide to not give you an offer now.

Fingers crossed!

You're still in the running—better than a rejection right away! If you haven't heard an update yet, I suggest following up with the team on Jan 31st. In the meantime, refrain from asking for updates. Did they give you feedback on case/fit? If your performance wasn't strong enough to secure the offer right away (assuming his is why they're holding off vs. it's their policy to interview all candidate), you want to zero in on what you need to be working on for other interviews.

If you want to chat through how R2 interviews went and talk about a plan of action to line up alternatives, don't hesitate to reach out!

"whether I have a chance still or is it really up to how the other remaining candidates perform?"

It's not "whether". It's either! You have a chance, but you already took your shot, so it's up to how other candidates perform.
