I go to an east coast semi target for consulting think Uchicago/Brown/Dartmouth but am originally from LA thinking about recruiting for MBB LA offices. Should I even participate in on campus recruiting events with people from Boston or NY? Any advice on what I should do?

Hey there!

You should 100% participate.

While it is more effective to network with members of your target office / system it is still very valuable for you to connect with members from other offices. Their recommendation carries weight, even if they are from another office / system.

Best of luck!

When it comes to my other networking efforts, should I spend time emailing Dartmouth alums in NY and Boston, or would it be better spent talking to non-Dartmouth people in the LA office?

I would do both. Speak to Dartmouth alumns (in any office) and ask them for help connecting you to members of the LA office. If you have a way to directly connect with LA office members obviously do that as well.

Yes, definitely participate in on-campus recruiting events, even if they’re hosted by Boston or NY offices.

  • Recruiters and consultants often share notes across offices, and strong impressions can help you get referred or noticed by the LA team.
  • When networking, just be clear about your office preference (LA) and share a compelling reason (e.g., personal ties, long-term fit).

Use every opportunity to build relationships, it all helps your overall application.
Best of luck!

Hi there,

Q: Should I even participate in on campus recruiting events with people from Boston or NY? Any advice on what I should do?

If you have a chance, yes. The reason is that you can be referred by someone from office A to office B. Therefore, if you manage to secure a referral, that would still be useful.

Good luck!

Hi,

Yes you should participate!

It's a great opportunity to network because recruiters/company representatives are often the same people who travel to those different locations - each firm is a global network, so networking in one location is just as good as networking in another.

I recommend:

  • You attend the Boston/NY events and at those events ask if any recruitors can connect you to people in the LA office
  • Find alum from your school who went to the LA offices and reach out to them - find out their experiences, recruiting processes etc.

Good luck!

Hey there 👋🏼
Yes, definitely join your campus recruiting events — even if you're targeting LA! 🌴 Why? Because:

Recruiters and consultants talk internally — if you make a great impression at a Boston or NY event, they can easily refer or flag you to the LA team.
✅ You’ll learn a ton about the firms, prep expectations, and culture — all of which help in any office.
✅ Early networking builds momentum — especially helpful if LA is a smaller office with fewer events.

Pro tip: when you connect, just mention early and politely that you’re LA-based and hoping to recruit there. People respect clarity and initiative!

Happy to chat more about how to position yourself across offices in coaching 💬

Best, Alessa
