I (undergraduate student) received an internship offer for next summer (by then I will have begun my master's at the same university) at an MBB firm but now do not want to proceed with my master's in engineering due to finances. The master's in engineering will not necessarily help me in management consulting and it is financially better for me to start full time instead. I was told during recruiting that the internship is more selective compared to the full-time roles so, Is this an option? If so, how would I approach this conversation (I have an internship offer but would rather start full-time instead).
Internship offer but want full time

Hi there,
Not sure where you heard that the internship is more selective than the FT roles. Generally speaking, an internship may lead to a FT role, which I am sure you're well aware of.
For your situation, I see two lines of enquiry with the firm:
- You can ask them whether they could advance the internship, if there's otherwise too much of a gap by not starting the masters degree. They may or may not have some flexibility with that.
- You can ask whether there's a path to a FT offer that doesn't rely on completing the internship first. I don't see the harm in doing that at all, so long as you keep a positive attitude. That being said, don’t get your hopes up too much in the current climate.
The above lines of enquiry also depend on whether or not the firm expect you to complete the masters as part of the deal (internship or FT). If it was previously communicated that you are going to complete said degree, and now you aren't, you may want to address that first.
Hope this helps a bit. Best of luck!
Moritz

Hi there,
Congratulations on the offer! In terms of your questions:
1) it is financially better for me to start full time instead. Is this an option?
I would check with HR. This might or might not be possible depending on the needs of the company.
2) If so, how would I approach this conversation (I have an internship offer but would rather start full-time instead).
I would call HR, explain the situation and ask if there is an option to move the offer to full-time. If that’s not possible, you might check if you could start the internship earlier.
Good luck!
Francesco

The safest approach is to start the internship, do very well and then have a conversation about options to start your full time role without the planned Masters. In almost all cases they will be fine with you not getting a graduate degree. The only challenge will be if there are enough spots for you to start immediately or whether you may have to wait a bit before starting.

The safest route is to begin the internship, excel, and then discuss transitioning to a full-time position without the intended Masters. In most instances, they will be receptive to you not pursuing a graduate degree. The primary consideration may be the availability of immediate openings or a potential short wait period.

Hi!
The way you're positioning makes sense and I would be direct with HR.
You could just explain the situation as you did here, saying that the Masters program is no longer a priority and ideally you'd start in a full-time role.
See what they say. If they push for the internship, then ask whether you could start full-time after the internship if they do decide to extend a full-time offer.

Hi there,
It doesn't hurt to ask!
Think through the best way to articulate this (this is really important!) and then talk to HR about your situation.
Make sure you ask and don't demand.
I agree with the other coaches that you might be able to start the internship early (accelerated)…which is much more likely than them converting to full-time.
Please remember that the internship is NOT more selective. Rather, it is an entry point into FT (as they want to test your capabilities/skills before making an offer).
Good luck!

Hi there,
Talk with your recruiting contact and explain you changed your mind about your master and would like to explore the possibility to join as full time employee. Be ready for a negative answer if you have already completed the internship recruiting process.
In any case, if you already have the internship offer, carefully consider accepting it, perform great and secure your full time offer with less risk than potentially going through recruiting again.
Best,
Alberto

Hey there, internships are less selective than full-time roles honestly. Openly address your request with HR, best way to go. Warm regards, Frederic
