Fit interview with McKinsey

Hi,

Tomorrow, I am going to have 30 min Fit interview with HR and I am a little bit nervous.

Any tips how to answer the questions? (most probably questions will be like why consulting? why McKinsey? What impact you can give to McKinsey?)

thanks in advance!

Hi there,

If it’s a 30 min interview with HR, it’s likely more of a screening call than what you’re calling a ‘fit’ interview.

The ‘fit’ interview, or PEI as it’s called at McKinsey, is conducted by consultants in the first and second round interview stages.

The main purpose of your HR call is to get a bit more context on your CV and experience to date, and they’ll also take note of your communication skills. Highlight your leadership experience, examples of professional impact, and problem-solving skills.

If you get questions about ‘why consulting’ or ‘why McKinsey’ it’s best to be authentic. That being said, a safe answer might mention that you’re interested in creating meaningful impact for both business and society - and that McKinsey’s high profile projects are a way for you to do so.

Best of luck, and let me know if you would like some McKinsey-specific prep.

Hi there,

Q: Any tips how to answer the questions?

The exact tips depend on the question (each question is a bit different in terms of what it requires in terms of structure). You can find some tips for specific questions at the following links:

If you have doubts about a specific question, I recommend opening a new thread in the Q&A and asking that question specifically to get a more targeted answer.

Good luck!

Agreed with Mihir. I would prepare answers to standard questions like:

1) Exec level 1 min intro to yourself and background

2) Overview of your CV / experience

3) Why consulting

4) Why McKinsey (i've never had this question but it's a no regrets to prep for)

5) Strengths and weaknesses (2 each)

Hi there,

Make a mix of being yourself and connecting your stories to McKinsey values (available at their website). Don’t overthink, they already think you may have a fit with the company if they called you to this screening call. Authenticity is the key :)

Good luck!

Hi there,

It's rather unusual to have a fit interview with the recruiter for McKinsey. Typically you have the PEI (the McKinsey name for the fit component) as part of the full interview with the consultants (the other component of each interview is the case).

I would rather expect that this half hour chat with the recruiter is meant to assess whether you are relevant for the role, to explain to you the recruitment process and to align on the interview timings. If you are unsure, however, do reach out to them with the question to clarify. Normally, this component is not evaluative.

Best,
Cristian

hi!

Totally normal to feel nervous! ;) Just keep your answers structured, personal, and clear. For "Why consulting?", link it to your curiosity, problem-solving drive, and love for teamwork. For "Why McKinsey?", mention global exposure, steep learning, and values that align with yours. For "What impact?", tie your strengths to what McKinsey needs, e.g. analytical skills, ownership mindset, or cross-cultural experience.

Use the past–why–future flow: what led you here, why now, and what you bring.

You'll do great—happy to do a quick mock if you need!

Best,
Alessa

Hi there,

Totally understandable to feel nervous — but with some structure, you'll come across as clear and confident. Here’s how to tackle the main questions:

1. Why consulting?
Frame this around your motivation to solve complex problems, work across industries, and grow fast. Use a brief personal story if you can — for example, how a past experience sparked your interest in consulting-style work.

2. Why McKinsey?
Focus on what makes McKinsey unique to you:

  • Its global scale and high-impact clients
  • The structured learning and mentorship
  • The strong team culture or values (e.g. obligation to dissent, client-first mindset)

Make it personal — mention a McKinsey person you spoke to or a value that genuinely resonates with you.

3. What impact can you bring to McKinsey?
Think about 2–3 strengths that match what McKinsey values:

  • Analytical problem solving
  • Clear communication
  • Ownership and leadership
  • Team collaboration

Use examples from your past that demonstrate these traits — ideally with measurable results (e.g. “increased X by Y”).

Structure your answers (e.g. “three main reasons...”), keep them concise, and end each with a sentence that ties it back to McKinsey’s environment.

Happy to help you prep – feel free to reach out.

Best,
Evelina
