Do you know any free simulations of the Mckinsey solve test? Ecosystem + redrock

I would love to practice but everything simulation out there seems too expensive.

Hi there,

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your question:

  • First of all, since the McKinsey Solve pre-interview assessment has been around for several years, I am sure that all the free material out there is enough for you to understand the logic and ultimately succeed.
  • Moreover, if you'd still like to invest in your professional future, I would be more than happy to prepare you thoroughly for the McKinsey Solve in one coaching session.

You can find more on this topic here: How to succeed in the final interview round.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to best prepare for your upcoming McKinsey Solve pre-interview assessment and McKinsey interviews, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Definitely check out casebasix. They have a similar simulation and would definitely help you get a feel of the real test.

I haven't really seen any free sims for the McKinsey Solve. But I can totally share some tips and strategies for a few of the mini-games. I've actually got a whole breakdown. You can check out my article on my homepage "Linkjob" about the "McKinsey Solve" game, which also includes a detailed video walkthrough.

Here's some of the key points. If you'd like to see the complete guide, you can check out the full article.

McKinsey Ecosystem Game

  • Core Strategy: Carefully manage species interactions and energy flows.

  • Steps: Start with plants to form the base of the food chain, then introduce herbivores that eat them. Once the herbivore population is stable, bring in the carnivores.

  • Heads-up: Don't introduce too many carnivores too fast, it can collapse the whole chain. Also, get rid of or avoid invasive species early, they just destabilize everything. Always keep an eye on the energy flow, and if it drops, adjust your species mix.

McKinsey Plant Defense Game

  • Core Strategy: Protect the central plant from waves of invaders.

  • Steps: Build layers of defense using barriers like rocks and dense vegetation right in the invaders' path. Use these to create a bottleneck so multiple defenders can attack at once.

  • Heads-up: Pick versatile defenders like eagles for their range and snakes for quick, short-range defense. After each round, check for weak spots and move barriers or defenders to cover those zones.

McKinsey Red Rock & Sea Wolf Games

  • Core Strategy: Manage limited resources, adapt to new events, and balance survival decisions over multiple rounds.

  • Steps: Take 30 seconds to map out your initial resources (food, water, fuel). Efficiently assign crew or units to collection or trade tasks. I usually prioritize food first, then materials.

  • Heads-up: Keep 10–20% of your budget for contingencies like storms or unexpected damage. The game rewards survival, not hoarding, since stockpiled resources can get lost to decay or attacks. And learn from every failed run. Take notes on what resources ran out and what routes worked best for your next try.
