Received but rejected an offer 1.5 years ago, how can I reconnect with the firm?

I received an offer from a firm 1.5 years ago but did not join the firm in the end. I am currently interested to join this firm (exactly the same role and team), what is the best way to reconnect with the firm? Should I reconnect with the interviewers & HR that interviewed me, or should I directly apply again?

Lastly, realistically speaking will I need to go through all the interview stages again, or is there a way that I can directly join the firm? The direct report is still the same guy, and the team structure & reporting line is still the same.

Hello there,

Since you have a history with the firm, it's a good idea to reach out to both your previous interviewers and the HR contact you were in touch with during the offer stage. If you can get referred this would be ideal, address the time gap since the offer, explaining any relevant changes in your circumstances, highlight any updated skills or experiences that make you a stronger candidate now, and request a conversation to discuss the possibility of rejoining the team.

This proactive approach showcases your professionalism and genuine enthusiasm for the role.

As for the interview process and whether you'll need to go through it again.

Hope this helpful!

Hi there,

Absolutely reconnect with them - all of them! (one at a time though).

Give them a short update, let them know you're really serious about the firm now (for x reason) and would love a chance to interview again.

In what you write, you need to be very smart about how you word it and what you say, in order to have maximum impact.

You will almost certainly need to interview again.

Hi there,

1) What is the best way to reconnect with the firm? Should I reconnect with the interviewers & HR that interviewed me, or should I directly apply again?

If you had a good connection with HR, you can connect with that person, explain the situation and ask if you could apply again.

If you did not have a good connection, I would look for a referral (a current consultant, not HR), explain the situation and ask them to check with HR.

You can find more on referrals below:

2) Will I need to go through all the interview stages again, or is there a way that I can directly join the firm?

This might depend on the firm, but I would expect in most cases you will have to redo the whole process.

Good luck!

Francesco

Hi,

I would suggest that you reconnect with both (assuming that the interviewers are also part of the same team that you will be working with). Explain your context succintly and when talking to HR seek their guidance on the expected process.

Whether or not you will need to go through the interview stages again would be firm dependent. At least at BCG, you would need to interview again, but I've heard of other smaller/boutique firms skipping the interview.

All the best!

Hi there!

If the team is exactly the same, I'd just reach out to the main contact and discuss your application before applying.

Otherwise they might reject it by default because they'll find it confusing.

Make sure that you have a good reason for why you turned them down initially but now changed your mind. Big firms usually don't like this.

Last but not least, make sure that you apply to many other places as well. The more the better. Here's a guide that will also help you develop your application strategy:

Best,
Cristian

Hello,

If you had a good connection with HR and the interviewers last time you applied, I would definitely reach out to them. Explain your situation, specifically why you are interested in joining now after rejecting their offer first time around, and reaffirm your interest in joining the company. I would also recommend having a conversation with HR to ask them to instruct you on how to proceed with your application.

It is likely that you will have to re-interview again, but it’s worth bringing this up with HR and seeing what they say.

Hi there,

happy to share my thoughts also.

  1. How should you reconnect? Suggest you do so with the person you had the best connection with throughout the process - can be an HR team member, interviewer or initial referral. He/she will resonate most with your intention and can put in a good word for you to get the process reopened.
  2. Do you have to do the interviews again? This depends a lot on the firm and situation. You may have to go through all or at least last stage of the interviews again for most firms. Suggest you clarify on that with HR, as it's hard to give you an accurate answer from the outside.

Hope this helps.

Regards, Andi
