Hi All, I have struggle to find how to answer "why BCG ?" I tried to ask a couple of consultants and do my own research. However, I have not got strong answers related to this.

Globally, what are the difference between BCG and MCk/Bain ?

Locally, how can I do research to know more about differentiator in specific office ?

Overall, how can I answer this question well ? How many points should I provide ?

Thank you for your help

Hey there,

I'd recommend you to answer this question both from a fact-based perspective as well as a personal level, in a top-down manner:

''I want to work for BCG mainly for <3-4> reasons, first......second......"

Fact-based ideas:

  • Learning curve (same for all, still can be used as an argument for BCG)
  • Staffing model (in between McK/ Bain, less global, less regional)
  • Industry or functional focus (depends on the office you are applying to, do a little Linkedin and Google research)
  • Impressions from research published (do a quick Google research)
  • Reputation (less affected by negative news than McK recently)
  • ...

Personal reasons:

  • People you know or have met that work at BCG
  • Impression from recruiting events
  • Impressions from correspondence with HR and consulting staff
  • ...

All the best,

Florian

Hi there,

You can choose three points out of those below to structure an answer:

  • Sectors of interest: specific focus of the company in areas/products interesting for you
  • People you met and culture: specific people of the company you talked to, and the things they shared on the company
  • Your growth opportunities: specific programs of the company you heard about to enhance your growth
  • Company potential: how much the company grew in the last year and its recent development in new areas, which is a good guarantee for your future career as well
  • Size/reputation of the firm: smaller companies usually offer a more entrepreneurial culture, with higher growth potential internally. Bigger companies have more resources and support staff, and more prestige in terms of exit.

Whatever topic you choose, you should apply a simple rule of thumb: if you can change the name of BCG with another and the answer still makes sense, it means your answer is not specific enough and you need to provide more details.

Hope this helps,

Francesco

Hi there,

We can't "give" you this answer. It has to be genuine or they'll be able to tell! Generally though, when people explain why BCG, they tend to reference any of the following: Culture, L&D, Scope of work, exposure, Reputation, etc.

Why x company

  • Start with a "mini" why consulting
  • Then have 2-3 reasons why x company is your target
  • Every "reason" needs to incorporate 1) That you know they value x 2) That you not only value x but have exhibited it and done it in the past
  • Be very very mindful of what they want you to want

In figuring this out, two things can really help you: 1) Networking and 2) Coaching

The story of your life is in progress, how does BCG fit into that story at this stage- their culture, values, poeple you know there, pipeline of work, attitude towards risk/innovation, reputation, Digital transformation projects etc

Also, answer why BCG should hire you? What do you bring to them- values, skills, experiences, network, innovative ideas etc. Go a step further and talk about your 90 day plan when you get hired. Come across as if you are already in the firm!

Keep it relaxed (2-3 mins long answer) but make the language emotive (e.g. add some humour if you can). Have fun with this and dont go by the same boring template which 90% of candidates use.

Feel free to send me a direct message if you want to discuss this.

There are no strong answers for those type of questions. And no one expects a strong answer.

What you need to understand is what they are really asking.

And what they are really asking is WHY (should) BCG (hire you)?

This is what you really need to answer. You want BCG because BCG is looking for the attributes that you can bring to BCG. Got it? ;)

Of course you also need to answer the question at face value, and for that you can draw from Florian's answer.
