The exhibits of the case

Hello, I have a question aconcerning the exhibits and the information that is shared with the interviewee. If I see "give this information if asked by the interviewee" does it mean if I do not ask about it it won't be provided for the case? Can the interviewer redirect me if I did some assumptions like the average market price of a product to calculate the market size, knowing that he has an information about it?

Thank you in advance.

Hi Carla,

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your questions:

  • First of all, yes, "if asked by the interviewee" means that if you, the interviewee, don't ask for the information, you usually won't get it, unless you're stuck and need the interviewer to steer you.
  • Moreover, yes, the interviewer can and will usually steer you where necessary. They want you to succeed in the case study, no matter the outcome of your application process.

You can find more on this topic here: How to succeed in the final interview round.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to best prepare for your upcoming pre-interview assessments and/or interviews, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Hi Carla,

If an exhibit or data point is marked as "give this information if asked," the interviewer will not proactively provide it unless you specifically ask. This tests your ability to identify relevant information and ask targeted questions. You should be driving the case and probing for data/info.

Suppose you make incorrect assumptions, such as estimating a market price when specific data is available. In that case, the interviewer may redirect you to clarify, ask for assumptions explicitly, or provide the information directly. It is always wise to ask if data is available on key variables of your calculation after attempting to estimate it (you can also ask first!).

Here are some tips to ensure you're getting the data you need:

  1. After the prompt is shared, take 1-2 mins to ask clarifying questions on the scope, client's industry/business model/product, and objectives -- this will shape your framework and initial hypotheses
  2. Develop a framework/driver tree that identifies the key info/data you will need to test your hypotheses (this is what will set you up for success)
  3. When carrying out analysis, structure the "formula" first, state our assumptions clearly, and ask for data; if there's no data, proceed with your estimations and ensure you're sanity checking numbers

Feel free to reach out to discuss this in more detail!

Cheers

Vini

Hey there,

Generally, yes to both questions. That information would only be given to the candidate (interviewee) if they ask for it. But then the interviewer does that the discretion to steer you towards that

Hi there,

If it's a candidate-led case, you need to drive the interviewer to provide you with the relevant data. If, after a while, this did not happen and you are fishing in the dark, they may provide it on their own - however, at this time, its very hard to come back and turn the case into a positive evaluation.

All the best,

Florian

Hi Carla,

1) If I see "give this information if asked by the interviewee" does it mean if I do not ask about it it won't be provided for the case?

Assuming the interviewer wants to follow the instructions of the case, that’s correct.

2) Can the interviewer redirect me if I did some assumptions like the average market price of a product to calculate the market size, knowing that he has information about it?

Yes, that might be possible. In general, it makes sense to ask if the interviewer has information before making assumptions.

Best,

Francesco
