Hi all,

A few months ago, I concluded an internship at McKinsey. The return offer policy at this office is moving interns to the final round interviews for the BA position, and if you pass you receive the return offer.

I did well in the internship and the partner I worked with offered to give me a recommendation. How does this work in this context seeing as it is not a referral and I am at the final round?

Thanks in advance!

Firstly, congratulations on completing your internship and reaching the final round of interviews!

In your context, a recommendation from a partner you've worked with can certainly be advantageous. While it may not technically be a 'referral' in the conventional sense, it still carries significant weight. Essentially, the partner would speak to your skills, competencies, and suitability for the full-time position, reinforcing your candidacy.

How this typically works is the partner would either speak to the interviewers or the recruiting team before your final round, or write a formal recommendation that is added to your application file. This can give the interviewers additional context and positive information about you before they meet you.

Remember, however, that while having a recommendation is certainly beneficial, it's your performance in the final round that will ultimately determine whether or not you receive a return offer. Make sure you prepare thoroughly and showcase the skills and qualities that make you a strong fit for the BA role.

Best of luck in your final round!

Hi there,

I would expect they will take it into account together with your performance in interviews.

Good luck!

Francesco

Hi there,

Congrats on the good performance and getting invite directly to the final round!

Basically, you can just expect a final round. That means that you need to prepare for it just as you did for your internship interviews.

Don't take it for granted that you had a good performance and that you got good feedback from the Partner. The industry is rather tight at the moment and they are very selective about who is getting in, so be at your absolute best for the interview.

Best,
Cristian

Hello,

Sounds like you did great in the internship, congratulations! I don’t think there’s anything you need to do on your end – HR should reach out to the partner you worked with to ask about you, at which point he can give his recommendation.

Hi there,

This is great and sounds super promising!

Basically, it likely means the Partner will talk to the other partners and go to bat for you.

The Partners own the company. Therefore, they have a right to determine/impact hiring.

Basically, just do a good job on the interview and you should be quite safe.
