P/F classes

Hi!

I am applying for MBB for the internship cycle, and looking at Denver/Detroit/Seattle offices and I'm from UMich- Ann Arbor dual majoring in UX & Math.

My 2nd semester of sophomore year went quite bad and i have an F in a P/F course which doesn't affect my GPA, but my GPA is overall down to a 3.75 and would be a 3.8 end of the upcoming fall sem. Since deadlines are coming up, would this not get me a first round?

This would not be a limiting factor.

Several of my colleagues at McK had less-than-perfect GPAs, or were even from non-target schools.

MBB isn’t likely to care about scores from individual classes - and once you receive an offer, it’s not grade-dependent (i.e. when I received my McK offer in undergrad, all I needed to do was finish my degree).

Aside from academic pedigree, the key thing for an MBB application is for it to show tangible, measurable examples of personal leadership and initiative-taking.

Let me know if you’d like some help crafting your application or preparing for MBB interviews.

hey there!

I would say your GPA & the strong dual major is still competitive for MBB. One P/F F that doesn’t impact GPA is unlikely to be a dealbreaker, especially if you show strong leadership, internships, and problem-solving skills. Submit your app confidently and focus on telling a sharp, cohesive story in your resume and cover letter.

Hi there!

The GPA is not the only thing that matters and definitely not the thing that matters the most.

You can compensate for it by having a well-written CV that makes the most of your experience to date (consider working with an expert on this one) and a referral.

Go also broad with your application strategy so your diversify your risk a bit more. Here's an approach on how to do it:

One weak grade won’t sink your application.

There are far more important factors—like awards, scholarships, leadership roles, and extracurriculars. That’s what builds a strong overall story.

Focus on crafting a world-class resume and cover letter that bring your whole profile to life. That’s what gets you the interview.

Best,

Alberto

Hi there,

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your question:

  • First of all, and contrary to what other coaches have said, unfortunately, no one can seriously answer the question of whether this will prevent you from being invited to interviews. However, statistically speaking, it is rather unlikely that this minor drop in GPA will be the deciding factor.
  • Moreover, instead, I would strongly advise you to ensure that your application files are polished to perfection and that you have secured strong referrals, as these aspects will most likely matter a lot more.

You can find more on this topic here: How to succeed in the final interview round.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to best prepare your application files, for your upcoming pre-interview assessments and/or interviews, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Hi there,

Q: Since deadlines are coming up, would this not get me a first round?

Both 3.75 and 3.8 are fine. If you are above 3.7, in general, it is a good GPA. If the F doesn’t affect the GPA, it should not be an issue.

I would recommend looking for referrals as well to increase your chances of an invitation. You can find some tips for that below:

Good luck!
