Middle East Job Market - Tier 1/2/ Boutique firms

Hello All, I wanted to ask for feedback on what the genuine job market like for consulting in Dubai/ Middle East currently?

I know that generally the consulting sector is on a down cycle right now, but is this universal?  Any notable differences with Tier 1, 2  or Boutique firms?  Are there any other regions where the market is good e.g. UK, US, or EU?

I completed MBA from Manchester Uni last year (Finished top of class).  Its a good Uni, but not tier 1.

Also have 8 years managerial experience in offshore O&G as engineer/ PM  for major companies. My CV is about as good as it can get, except that I do not have the prestigious Uni to go with it. My salary right now is probably higher than consulting (200K USD) but I am keen for a change as I have hit a ceiling in personal growth and want a new challenge.

I know this industry has always been highly competitive, and I did not study at target Uni. So I want to know if realistically it is worth making the concentrated effort to enter this industry.

Is it worth it to make a concentrated effort to enter management consulting? From my experience, the answer is yes. The growth, exposure, prestige, mid-long term compensation and people you meet all make it worth it.

But you are right - it is difficult now. Middle East was one of the few regions that were still hiring aggressively in recent times, but I have on anecdotal information from friends in Tier 1 and Tier 2 firms that things are slowing down now and ME firms are starting to cut people etc.

The one region that comes to mind that is still pretty good now is Japan but it would not be possible for you to work there given you really need local language there.

Still - I would advise you to try, as much as firms are cutting and hiring cycles are lean, there will still be openings in select firms and niches - typically for Practice Area aligned roles.

So what's key right now is really starting your networking, not just to find out info but also to help get a foot in the door.

All the best!

What makes you say that about Japan? 1) Do you know WHY Japan is still going strong? 2) Are they AGGRESSIVELY hiring? And if so, at what level (undergrad, post- MBA, lateral / experience hire)?

Hi there,

You are correct!

Middle East was THE hiring market over the last 2 years compared to sluggish growth in the rest of the world.

It seems like this slowdown has finally caught up with the region and we are seeing a significant reduction in hiring and in some firms even firings.

What this means for you as a candidate: Now is as good time to apply as any as hiring has slowed down but for most, it's still happening - especially for exceptional candidates.

You need to make sure that you ace every step of the process though and this starts with a proper networking and referral strategy.

All the best,

Florian

Actually, ME is one of the few regions that is still hiring.

Most of the candidates that I work with at the moment are specifically preparing for that region.

Still, if I were you, I'd make a list of all the firms I'd want to target and start having a chat with the recruiter from each so you get a confirmation as to what role you should go for and whether they're actively recruiting (to not waste time and hopes).

To be honest, no region is particularly strong at this point. Even the Middle East, which tended to be more stable and stronger in that last few years, is now slowing down significantly and we're even seeing some entry dates being postponed.

Hi there,

First of all, congratulations on your career trajectory thus far!

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your situation:

  • First of all, while it is understandable that you want to “time the market”, it would certainly not be a sensible thing to do, especially as consulting firms in the Middle East are still hiring, as I can confirm from some of my coachees who I am currently helping to secure offers in the region.
  • Moreover, if it is your desire to work in this industry, I see no reason why you should wait any longer. Prepare thoroughly, give it your best shot and see the results.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on your specific situation, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

I recently completed the McKinsey Solve game about 3 weeks ago and am yet to hear back. I was wondering if only the successful candidates have heard back yet and if all candidates are invited to Solve?
