1. Can I apply to both McKinsey digital Consultant position and McKinsey Associate position?

No. You can only apply for one position at a time. Get HR's perspective as well on what would be a best fit for you.

2. What is the difference between them? Knowing that I am interested to work as a generalist strategy consultant.

Basically, generalists do absolutely all types of projects. Digital consultants work almost exclusively on projects which have a digital component (e.g., a bank's digital transformation). It's closer to the expert track in that sense. 

Learning more about this is also an excellent opportunity for networking. You could reach out to some of the current consultants in your target firm and office who are at a similar seniority level to the one that you're aiming for, and then ask them more about how the role feels on a day to day basis.

The short answer to your questions is as follows

1. Yes you can but I do not think it is advisable at all for two reasons
   • It shows that you do not have a clear idea of which role you want to apply to and are just trying to maximize your chances/game the system
   • McKinsey digital associates can spend 50% of their time working on projects outside of McK Digital ones so you will anyway get a chance to experience other types of work
2. McKinsey digital projects are focused largely on digital transformation type work. Generalist consulting projects are more broad. However there is a LOT of overlap between the two

You can be considered for one position, so regardless of the actual possibility of applying to both, I would recommend picking the one more interesting to you.

In the digital division you will cover more digital projects. So if you are interested in working as a generalist, the standard Associate position seems a better fit in your case.

I would advise against this. Pick.

Very big difference! One works on “general” projects. Wide range of topics. The other works on “digital” project (i.e. more on tech/IT). Here are 2 cases I wrote that have digital themes, so you can get an idea:

Agree with Udayan here. Once you are in honestly, there is not such a huge difference, I worked on McKinsey Digital projects as a generalist and vice versa such colleagues worked on my strategy engagements. Warm regards and best of luck! Frederic

Just adding on top of my colleague's responses, you need at least 3-4 years of experience in a digital role to apply to McKinsey Digital as Associate.
