McKinsey Rejection

Hi everyone,

I recently had a first-round interview with McKinsey but received a rejection email afterward. The email mentioned that, despite the rejection, they would keep my information on file for future opportunities. They also asked if I would be interested in being considered for those opportunities.

I'm wondering if this is just a standard template they send to all candidates or if it actually suggests there could be a real chance for me in the future.

If it is legitimate, what can I expect? Does it mean I'm on some kind of waiting list, or could I potentially be invited for the next recruitment cycle or other roles?

Any insights or experiences would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Edited: I just noticed that not all rejected candidates received that message. What does this mean?

Hi there,

sorry about the rejection. This sort of notification is pretty standard. It is unlikely that they will reach out to you proactively. But after a ban period of 12-18 months, you can consider re-applying if you are still interested. Your CV will have to reflect additional relevant experiences/accomplishments since your first application in order to have a chance to get invited again.

Best

Hi there!

Sorry to hear!

The email is generic and does not mean much.

However, regardless of that generic rejection email, keep in mind that you can re-apply after the ban period if you can demonstrate significant improvements on your resume in certain areas:

  • Academic experience (better GPA, new degree/program)
  • Work experience (new internships/ft positions, promotions)
  • Extracurriculars/leadership experience
  • Time spent abroad

It would also help if you score a referral for a re-application.

All the best,

Florian

The HR email doesn't explicitly state the ban period. How long will it be? And does it start from my first application or from the rejection date?

It's usually 12-24 months. Not sure if it's measured from the application date or interview date tbh.

Sorry to hear about the rejection. The email you got is a standard rejection email and it is meant to make you feel less bad. That being said if you do have deep expertise in a field they are interested in they can reach back out to you but it is not so common.

Hi there,

Q: I'm wondering if this is just a standard template they send to all candidates or if it actually suggests there could be a real chance for me in the future.

Unless they indicated a new date to reach out in the near future (I know this happened before when McKinsey rejected candidates due to a hiring freeze), I am afraid this is a standard template for rejection.

Best,

Francesco

Hi, thank you for your response. Could you please elaborate a bit more about rejections due to a hiring freeze? How can I differentiate whether my rejection was due to my performance or a hiring freeze, especially since I didn’t receive any feedback from HR?

Hi there, when you are rejected due to a hiring freeze, they normally indicate (i) that they are not currently hiring and/or (ii) that you can apply shortly (eg after a few months). Hope this clarifies.
