Mckinsey MBA Scheme

Hey,

When are you eligible for McKinsey sponsored MBA?

Are there certain roles where once you get to that level they wouldn't consider it?

How does the process work?

Hi there,

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your questions:

  • First of all, McKinsey typically sponsors MBAs for consultants who have been with the firm for around two years. The exact timing depends on the country and your role.
  • Moreover, I would advise you to wait until you have actually joined McKinsey (if you have not already done so), as they will certainly provide you with all the information about the process in detail.

You can find more on this topic here: How to succeed in the final interview round.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to best prepare for your upcoming McKinsey application, pre-interview assessment and/or interviews, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Hi there,

McKinsey’s MBA sponsorship is typically offered to high-performing analysts (business analysts, junior associates, or equivalent pre-MBA roles) who have been with the firm for a few years and are seen as strong candidates for long-term growth.

Eligibility
    •    Usually available to consultants at the pre-MBA level (e.g., Business Analyst, Junior Associate).
    •    Typically requires 2+ years of strong performance at the firm.
    •    You must be on a leadership and promotion trajectory, with clear potential to return as an Associate or beyond.
    •    The firm often sponsors candidates for top business schools (e.g., HBS, Wharton, INSEAD, LBS).

Roles That May Not Be Considered
    •    Post-MBA hires (Associate level and above) are generally not eligible, as they’re already expected to grow within the firm.
    •    Specialized tracks (e.g., implementation, digital, or expert roles) may have different policies.

How the Process Works
    1.    Internal Selection – Consultants who qualify are typically invited to apply internally.
    2.    Firm Support & Applications – If approved, McKinsey supports applications to top-tier MBA programs.
    3.    Financial Sponsorship – The firm covers full or partial tuition and may provide a stipend.
    4.    Return Commitment – Sponsored consultants must return to McKinsey post-MBA for a certain period (typically 2 years).

Let me know if you need any further advice - happy to help!

Best,

Evelina

Hey there,

Typically, this is available for Business Analysts (i.e. the role for direct undergraduate appointments) at the end of their program. Generally, the Business Analyst program would be a 2-year program, with the MBA offer being awarded on a performance / merit basis to successful Business Analysts. The naming convention for this role may change and be called something else depending on the region, but broadly the principle is maintained.

Feel free to get in touch directly if you'd like to know more and speak about it and implications for you based on the region you apply to

All the best

Hi there,

the McKinsey leave program - which could be either MBA leave, PhD leave or even Social leave - is originally designed for consultants that join the firm after obtaining either their Bachelor or Master degree. Most of these people join the firm as Analysts or (Junior) Associates, stay with the firm for approx. two years and then leave. That having said, general rule of thumb across regions is that the leave program is designed for people below the Engagement Manager role.

Hope that helps. If you have further questions, feel free to write a private message or set up a (free) call.

Kind regards,
Birgit

Hey!

At McKinsey, your eligibility for the MBA typically starts after you've been with the firm for a few years, usually as a high-performing Associate or Business Analyst (for pre-MBA hires). If you're already at the Engagement Manager level or higher, it's less common to get sponsorship, as the firm expects you to continue growing within the consulting track. The process involves internal discussions with your mentors and leadership, a formal application within the firm, and demonstrating strong performance and long-term commitment to McKinsey. Let me know if you need more insights! ?

Hi there,

It depends on the country/region.

  • Usually, you are eligible after 2 years in the firm
  • Your performance should allow you to progress to Sr. Asc
  • Some offices pay everything, others 50% and 1-year of salary. You would usually need to commit to come back for a bit; otherwise you have to pay them back

Cheers,

Florian

You have to be there for 2 years and strong performance (i.e., you would be promoted to the next rank)

 Hi there,

It is typically only applicable to BAs. But I've seen cases where people transferred their track to BA (usually folks without a master/MBA already) and then got the sponsorship. Note that in different geographical areas the requirements may be different.

Best,

Han

Mckinsey SHAPE Delivery Consultant Salaries - in my screening interiview HR asked me my expectations and current sallary. My current is much lower than what they would offer and I'm worried what I said as my expectation is much lower than what they do - is that a disadvantage.
