McKinsey Employment Check

Hello all,

I'm worried that an unpaid externship I did may not show up on the McKinsey employment check. Is this going to be a problem for my offer status?

Hi there,

First of all, congratulations on the offer from McKinsey!

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your question:

  • First of all, please keep in mind that you’re not obligated to include all your (semi-) professional experiences in a resume. It is an application form that has to be correct yet doesn’t have to be complete.
  • Moreover, background checks investigate exactly this – whether you worked and studied at the organizations you mentioned and whether the time period is generally in line. In most countries, there is not even legally the possibility to investigate further details.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to best prepare for your upcoming role at McKinsey, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Hi there,

Congratulations on the offer! In terms of your question:

Q: I'm worried that an unpaid externship I did may not show up on the McKinsey employment check. Is this going to be a problem for my offer status?

This should not be an issue, as they should be able to reach out to the company you worked for to ask for confirmation in any case.

All the best for a great start!

Francesco

Right, but the externship was through my school as it was a coop, and I never had to engage with any HR at the company aside from signing the offer letter. So, I'm afraid such a thing would not show up on their database / HR may not be aware

Hi there, in this case it should be sufficient that you share the offer letter or, if not sufficient, indicate your direct manager, so that they can confirm that you worked there. Hope this helps

Hey!

It’s unlikely that an unpaid externship not showing up in McKinsey’s employment check will affect your offer status, as McKinsey typically verifies formal work experience, especially for paid roles and those listed as full-time employment. If the externship was unpaid and not a primary job, it may not be part of a standard employment verification process. However, you should be transparent about it on your resume and in interviews.

If you disclosed the externship during the application process and it aligns with your experience, you shouldn’t face any issues. McKinsey is more concerned about the integrity of the information provided and whether your work experience matches your stated qualifications.

If you're worried, it might be worth contacting HR to clarify the situation :)

Best, Alessa

This shouldn't be a problem.

Make you can explain this to the recruiter if needed. McKinsey will contact the company in case they needed it.

Hi there!

An unpaid externship likely won’t impact your McKinsey offer, as they usually focus on verifying formal, paid, or full-time work experience. If the externship wasn’t your primary role, it may not be part of their standard employment check.

Being paid or unpaid has no impact. Ideally the company will be able to confirm you worked with them. If not, as long as you can provide an explanation (and possibly a contact), it's fine. Particularly if this doesn't have much relevance on your overall CV.

Hi there,

It sounds like this is one of many professional experiences you have. They probably didn’t hire you specifically because of this one item on your CV. And if questions do come up, you can explain.
