MBB in Germany

Hi, I was generally wondering what the process would be for landing a role as a fresh college grad at MBB Germany (or any top 10 strategy firm). Are they hiring currently? I'm also conflicted between Germany and Dubai when ranking office locations - would like to prioritize based on which region is hiring more aggressively to maximize my chances. Thank you so much!

Hi there,

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your questions:

  • First of all, the overall preparation and application process is always the same. I would advise you to use the PrepLounge material to get a basic understanding of what you are getting yourself into.
  • Moreover, apart from perhaps a brief period during the COVID-19 pandemic, there has really never been a complete hiring freeze, in any region or country.
  • Lastly, I would highly advise you not to try to game the system. If you are a strong candidate, you will most likely be invited, no matter how low the current hiring demands are. Otherwise, even high hiring demands won't help you. In addition, almost all major consulting firms allow you to specify multiple offices to apply to (in a specific order).

You can find more on this topic here: How to succeed in the final interview round.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to best prepare for your upcoming applications, pre-interview assessments and/or interviews, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Hi there,

From my current insights, Germany is hiring more than Dubai at the moment. If you are German, you should also have a slight advantage in your home turf.

The process is:

  1. Network for a referral
  2. Polish application documents
  3. Prepare for recruiting tests (after application screening)
  4. Prepare for case/fit interviews (2 rounds with 2-3 interviews each, each interview consists of fit and case)

You should start preparing 3 and 4 already before sending your application (around 80% ready).

All the best,

Florian

Hey there,

As a fresh college grad, you could consider the university recruitment programs that MBBs offer. Otherwise (and for other top firms) - the application generally involves creating an online profile and applying online. And yes, they are currently hiring. Depending on when you're graduating and all, MBBs tend to do rolling applications and are open to applications all year round.

In choosing between Germany and Dubai, some things to consider when making a decision should be the region you'd like or prefer to live in more, the types of work and client work that is most prevalent in that area, culture and working practices, and immigration and working rights amongst others. But even with that said, there's no reason why not to apply to both regions

And regarding the point of which region would be hiring more, this doesn't necessarily increase your chances just because they are hiring more. Remember that MBB only hire candidates that meet the performance bar and standards they are looking for - so for as long as you meet that criteria, more often than not, you'd get through. If you don't meet that criteria, it won't matter that they are aggressive in trying to grow - you won't get selected. So to maximise your chances of going through, maximise yourself and your preparation :-)

All the best!

Hey!

I was in the same position after my college graduation! The best approach is to apply to both Germany and Dubai (e.g., BCG), as they operate as separate entities and have different hiring needs. Typically, Dubai tends to have a higher demand for candidates, but Germany offers a strong market as well. To maximize your chances, tailor your application to each region and leverage networking opportunities with consultants in both locations. Let me know if you need any tips—happy to help!
