Left on terrible terms with my manager. Should I worry about background check?

Hi everyone. I am expected to receive a formal offer from an MBB firm in the middle east next week. I had a meeting with HR last week to let me know I was accepted and to detail the terms of contract for me. She advised me to kickstart my BG check already and register on the website of the providers. They asked for employment certificates, payslips, transcripts, and passport information. I know they will contact my previous employer since I consented to it upon registration. On the certificated you could see the title and dates as they are on my CV. However, I am particularly worried about the prospect of reaching out to my former manager as we left on extremely bad terms. I was hired on a FTC (at a development bank. FTCs is the common thing for entry level jobs) and I wasn't extended. She gave terrible comments about me to other teams I applied to at the bank as they would obviously reach out to her for comments. I know this because she told me she'd give negative comments about me in case she was asked. Such comments had little to nothing with my performance but rather my character as she thinks I constantly disrespected her by shying away from social events involving her.

I'm concerned she might do the same here.  Should I worry?

Let's put it like this: no one employed to do the background checks will have sufficient time to bother asking her what she thinks of you :) This if those checks are not automatic anyways.

As Florian was saying, the purpose of background checks is to verify you actually were employed there for the respective period of time.

Congrats on your offer btw! That's the important bit here :)

Best,

Ariadna

Hi there,

I would not worry about this.

  • This is just one of many things they are checking.
  • Also, they focus more on “did you actually work there/have this or that degree” vs. interviewing people about your past performance.

Cheers,

Florian

Backgound check's objective is to confirm that you studied and worked where you said (and with the role you said). It has nothing to do with your former employee's performance appraisal or opinion of you.
