I am not a Canadian but applying from a foreign country to Calgary , Canada specifically because of the Energy Practice in Calgary . Currently work for an Oil and Gas Major with an Engineering degree. I applied to McKinsey to just give it a shot and got a reply from an analyst to connect and an invitation to an hour long event for a deep dive into the McKinsey energy practice with Partners . What should I expect ? Or Prepare ?

P.S - The event is not Public . Couldn't find it anywhere else

Hey there,

Cool opportunity!

What to expect?

  • An informal event with some short presentation about the sector, McKinsey, trends, etc.
  • The opportunity to ask questions and network with consultants and partners

What to prepare?

  • Find and read the latest McKinsey publications about the sector
  • Prepare your introduction (short run-through of resume with 3 top spots and interest in the sector)
  • Prepare some questions (1. on the topic 2. about McKinsey applications 3. personal experiences)

Cheers,

Florian

Hi there,

I assume this is a virtual event for a selected number of candidates.

In terms of what to expect: they should provide an outline, but I believe it will be an overview of the opportunity at McKinsey for experienced hires in Energy.

The key things I would recommend to prepare in advance are the following:

  • Read about McKinsey Canada and what they do in the energy sector. Try to understand recent development – this will ensure you can ask credible questions and stand out
  • Learn as much as possible about the consultants who will participate in the event, if available. In this way, you will be able to connect more easily.
  • Prepare your own questions to ask. Relevant questions are a great way to show your interest in the company and get additional points. In the first reply at the following post you can find some information on the ideal type of questions to ask: https://www.preplounge.com/en/consulting-forum/open-house-at-bcg-311

Hope this helps,

Francesco

Hi there,

Great initiative - well done!

You should expect a presentation likely followed by a Q&A. You should prepare questions, and, just in case, be very clear about your answers to why consulting and why McK (as well as your elevator pitch).

If you're able to hop in and ask a good question or two, and, in particular, if they have some sort of breakout, absolutely try to take advantage of it!

If the speaker gives their contact info, try to reach out after to thank them for their time and ask if they may have any time to answer a few additional Qs you have.

Hello!

That is amazing, congrats! Not only a great networking opportunity, for for sure it will be a great learning event (that is one thing that I do miss from McKinsey).

My advise, in first place, is to go there with an open mind willing to absorb everything. Mck learning events are incredible and only for that is worth it. However, I agree with you that there is preparation needed, it’s not just a conference. This said, prepare it as you would prepare a FIT interview!  ?

If you want to deep dive on the topic, the "Integrated FIT guide for MBB" has been recently published in PrepLounge´s shop (https://www.preplounge.com/en/shop/tests-2/integrated-fit-guide-for-mbb-34)

It provides an end-to-end preparation for all three MBB interviews, tackling each firms particularities and combining key concepts review and a hands-on methodology. Following the book, the candidate will prepare his/her stories by practicing with over 50 real questions and leveraging special frameworks and worksheets that guide step-by-step, developed by the author and her experience as a Master in Management professor and coach. Finally, as further guidance, the guide encompasses over 20 examples from real candidates.

Furthermore, you can find an expert article in PrepLounge case regarding FIT preparation:

Finally, on top fo the article, you can find25 free cases in the PrepL case regarding FIT preparation:

Hello,

Sounds like a great opportunity! Florian said it best - it will be a great opportunity to hear a bit about McKinsey Canada's work in the sector and network with partners. My additional two cents would be:

1) Don't stress too much about this event - it is not evaluative, but just gives you an additional opportunity to make connections.

2) Focus on the networking - approach the partners, have some interesting questions ready, and try to develop a positive rapport with the partners.

I hope it goes well!
