Hi everyone,

I applied to an invite-only networking event in September, and unfortunately, I got the negative response. Does this mean I will be ghosted once I apply to Deloitte.?

For the application, I submitted my resume which an Accenture MD has screened, and a cover letter, which a former KPMG partner screened. There was a HireVue component to the application, and I answered the questions in ways that got positive responses from my networking calls. I come from a Deloitte target school (USC) and have had networking calls with three members of the on-campus recruiting team, gone to all the meet and greets, and a referral for a different analyst position (the on-campus recruiting analyst position was not open for internal referrals according to the person who referred me and my on-campus recruiter).

Deloitte is my dream firm, and I am a little rattled. I do not know where I went wrong in this process

Hello!

“I applied to an invite-only networking event in September, and unfortunately, I got the negative response. Does this mean I will be ghosted once I apply to Deloitte.? ”

Not necessarily. Invite only events usually have a limited number of participants and the screening can be done by a different recruiter than the general intake.

Still go through with the application, but make sure you get a solid referral within the firm. There's nothing to lose if you apply anyway, but you may lose a job opportunity if you don't :)

I do not know where I went wrong in this process

This is the common human misconception that if we fail to achieve something, there must be something we did wrong. In reality, there are a lot of things that are beyond our control. You did everything you could in this situation by proof-reading you CV multiple times and getting multiple leads within the firm. The rest is not up to you

As an example, two of my friends got rejected for participation in a Bain invite-only event, by both ended up getting McKinsey offers.

Deloitte is my dream firm, and I am a little rattled.

Although I myself worked at Deloitte for 3+ years and absolutely loved the culture and the people, there are far better consultancies out there in terms of your growth opportunities.

So do not get hung up on just one firm and continue applying to other places. Dream big and aim high ;)

Good luck!
Nick

Nope!

I know this for a fact as I have actually looked at the data.

It is highly correlated to being invited to interview. However, no invite-only event does not mean zero. (The correlation difference changes by company as well as region)

Here's a snippet from the article I wrote on this. (I hid company names for the article, but Deloitte is one of those data points)

Hi there!

Wow, sorry to hear.

Honestly, it sounds like you did everything right.

The reality of the recruitment process is also that things just don't work out sometimes and there are elements of it that you can't control for.

To answer your question directly - no, if you were rejected for the event, it doesn't mean you'll be rejected for the interviews. But… it's likely.

My recommendation would be to get another pair of eyes on the application and maybe there's something that you missed out on.

Aside from this, make sure that you apply to other firms as well to diversify your risk.

Best,
Cristian

Hi there,

Sorry to hear about the event rejection. In terms of your question:

Q: I applied to an invite-only networking event in September, and unfortunately, I got the negative response. Does this mean I will be ghosted once I apply to Deloitte?

Not necessarily. Events and job applications are related to different channels. So even if you are rejected from an event you could receive an invitation for a job position.

Good luck!

Francesco

While it is better to be invited than not to be invited, this is far from representing a rejection.

It means you were not a top-tier candidate for the person who did the screening. Also understand that these events are used to incentivize certain candidates to apply (i.e. people who may be less inclined to apply for some socio-demographic reason).

Hi there,

sorry to hear that. I can imagine the level of frustration. These networking events usually only have room for a limited number of participants. Your competition for this very event might just have been too strong (on paper). I'd assume that the actual full-time hiring funnel for a firm like Deloitte allows for a greater number of candidates.

While making the cut for such an exclusive networking event already is a strong indicator that your application documents are strong enough for a first round interview, a non-invite does not automatically mean a ban from consideration. You should still apply, especially if you have already secured a referral.

But most importantly, if you really want to end up in consulting, you should consider applying to a variety of consulting firms and not only one. Success here is often based on a numbers game.

Best of luck

Hello,

I'm sorry to hear about your experience, especially given how much work you've put in on the networking!

Not being invited to the event isn't a great sign, but it does not necessarily mean that you'll be rejected.

My advice would be to get another pair of eyes to review your CV, cover letter, and application material, and workshop it some more. Honestly, working with a coach might be helpful, since coaches are experts on the recruiting process and know exactly what the recruiters are looking for.
