Confused and worried about my next step, Help!

Hi All,

I recently got my rejection from BCG ADC, however I had applied to McKinsey as an Associate. I am a PhD (completed my candidacy in between application and rejection) from a top Canadian School.

1. I applied to BCG online, is there a way to find out which HR rep/recruiter I should contact to learn more about my application, ban, etc.?

2. For my McK apps, they first emailed me asking to reapply with clearer educational background. I reapplied, still waiting for any response, but I got a job offer at a small firm as a consultant beginning end of month (I had no consulting experience before this, although entrepreneurial experience). I am thinking of withdrawing my application to McK, working at this firm, and reapplying. Would withdrawing be the best course rather than keeping my current application with no "consulting" experience? Would it result in a ban? Does this leave me with only one last shot should I want to apply later?

I'm just very confused by these processes and am pulling my hair out trying to navigate it all.

Thank you for any and all help.

Hi there,

First of all, I am sorry to hear about the rejection from BCG!

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your situation:

  • First of all, I would advise you not to reach out to the BCG recruiter as you will most likely not receive any meaningful feedback about your application this early in the application process.
  • Moreover, I would advise you to clarify your educational situation with McKinsey first before withdrawing your application.

You can find more on this topic here: How to deal with a rejection from a consulting company.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on your specific situation, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Hey there,

1. This will usually resort to some generic answer. Feel free to share your resume for a proper evaluation. Could be lack of relevant work experience.

2. Send McK HR an email, highlighting the update on your resume. I would not withdraw the application now as this would lead to more confusion.

All the best!

Hi there,

Your confusion is totally understandable but it's a transient phase to be over soon :)

  1. BCG application: The truth is that it is highly unlikely you get any useful information pertaining to your application / reason for rejection from a BCG recruiter at this stage. On the potential ban timeframe, I'd suggest you wait for a 12-24 month window before reapplying so you can show significant evolution. Before reapplying, you should also conduct a thorough resume review with a coach / current consultant to identify and address the likely reasons for initial rejection
  2. McKinsey application:don't see any advantage of withdrawing the application now since you implied that you already addressed the clarification of your educational background. Also, you should be able to reapply with your consulting experience after 12-24 months (you can clarify timeframe from recruiter that sent you an email)

Feel free to reach out for a brief chat, if needed for more clarity.

Hi,

I dont think withdrawing would result in a ban - but check with HR on this.

In terms of BCG, i think it's unlikely that they will give you the details on it, but you can try.

Remember, if MBB is really your dream, there are always multiple paths to it. Don't give up!
