BCG Onboarding platform - previous work experience

Hi,

I’m graduating this year and applying for a full-time consulting position. The BCG onboarding platform asks for a description of previous work experiences, including projects, courses, activities, and the skills gained. How much detail should I provide, and what are the key things to keep in mind when filling out the form? Also, how can I clearly distinguish or separate the sections about projects, courses, activities, and skills?

Thank you!

Hi there,

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your questions:

  • If I understand correctly, you are talking about the application form. So as long as your resume is polished to perfection for a consulting role at BCG, you can simply copy and paste the content from your resume into the application form.

You can find more on this topic here: How to succeed in the final interview round

If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to best prepare for your upcoming BCG pre-interview assessment and/or interviews, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Congrats on your graduation !
Here are my recommendations for your questions :

Details to include:

  • Projects: 1–3 bullet points each; focus on your role, actions, and outcomes. Quantify impact if possible.
  • Courses: List 3–6 relevant ones (strategy, finance, data, etc.); no need to describe in detail.
  • Activities: Highlight 2–4 leadership/extracurricular roles with specific achievements.
  • Skills: List relevant technical tools (Excel, Python, Tableau), languages (with fluency levels), but also skills such as Problem Solving, communication

How to format & best practices:

  • I would use clear section headings for each of the above
  • Use bullet points instead of paragraphs, starting with action verbs
  • Be as result-focused as possible, avoid technical jargon
  • Highlight what makes you consulting-ready, even as a young graduate, you have experiences from associations or internships where you can show leadership, presentations ...

Hope this helps !

Hey there 😊

Great question! For the BCG onboarding platform, the key is to be structured, concise, and impact-driven 💡 Here's how to approach it:

Level of Detail:
Give enough context to show what you did and why it matters, but don’t write full paragraphs. Aim for short, bullet-style points or compact sentences.

What to Highlight:
Focus on tangible impact, problem-solving, collaboration, and leadership. Think in terms of "What was the challenge? What did I do? What was the result?"

Separating Sections: You can do this cleanly by formatting it like:

  • Projects: Short titles + 1 line description of what you did, e.g.
“Market entry strategy project for XYZ startup – led competitor analysis and pricing recommendations.”
  • Courses: Only include ones relevant to consulting (strategy, finance, analytics, etc.), e.g.
“Advanced Strategy – developed a simulated M&A strategy using valuation models.”
  • Activities: Any leadership roles, volunteer work, team settings
“President of Consulting Club – organized weekly case prep sessions, mentored 10+ students.”
  • Skills: Keep these sharp and relevant
Excel, SQL, Python (basic), Financial modeling, Public speaking, Slide design

Tone: Keep it confident but humble. BCG is looking for potential, not perfection.

If you want, I’m happy to review a draft or give feedback on wording!

Best,
Alessa ✨

Hi there,

Enough to show impact and relevance, but not so much that it becomes a wall of text. Think of each entry as a mini case: clear structure, crisp context, sharp outcomes. Prioritize what aligns with the consulting skill set - problem-solving, leadership, drive, teamwork.

  • Make it skimmable: Use bullets, not paragraphs. Recruiters spend seconds, not minutes, per section.
  • Show, don’t tell: Quantify wherever possible, e.g., “Increased engagement by 30%,” “Led a 4-person team,” etc.
  • Tie it back: Every entry should say (implicitly), “This is why I’d be great at BCG.”
  • Be honest but strategic: You don’t need to list everything - just the most relevant and impressive.

Create clear subheadings. For example:

Projects

  • Developed a pricing model for a student startup, resulting in a 15% revenue lift.
  • Analyzed supply chain inefficiencies in a capstone, recommending solutions adopted by the partner company.

Courses

  • Decision Models: Built Excel-based optimization tools.
  • Corporate Strategy: Ran simulations and competitive analyses.

Activities

  • President, Consulting Club: Organized 12 events, coached 30 peers.
  • Debate Team: Regional finalist, honed structured thinking under pressure.

Skills gained

  • Structured problem-solving, team leadership, client communication, data analysis (Excel, Python).

That layout keeps things clear and gives the recruiters exactly what they’re looking for.

All the best,

Florian

Hi there,

The key here is to highlight your experience that are relevant to consulting (i.e., experience that allows you to have transferrable skills that you can use in a consulting role).

When you say you are just graduating, are you graduating from undergrad? If so, I expect a lot focus would be related to problem solving, while leadership / teamwork could also be good to highlight.

Some examples for illustration (but surely not exhaustive):

  • Project: A market study of XX; a competitive benchmark for XX; a pro-bono analysis for an NGO...
  • Course: Finance, Marketing, Business Fundamentals etc...
  • Activities: Organize / facilitate case competition of the school...
  • Skills: Modeling, Tableau, Alteryx etc…

Feel free to DM. I can share more details about the consulting eval criteria and that could give you more ideas of what the consulting firms are looking for.

Best,

Emily

#1 thing to keep in mind is that you want to showcase as much as possible that you have the skills / attributes that make you a (future) great consultant. Great analytics, strong drive, communication skills, etc.
