Hi there,

This is indeed an interesting question which is probably relevant for quite a lot of users, so I am happy to provide my perspective on it:

  • Generally speaking, the types of projects in consulting companies reflect the dominating local/ regional industries (unless you prefer to have project outside of your country/ region).
  • With SEA, based on my own experience and the ones of my coachees and personal network, you will frequently encounter projects in Banking, Telco, Logistics, Energy/ Oil & Gas.

In case you want a more detailed discussion on how the project environment with your target employer will look like, please feel free to contact me directly.

I hope this helps,

Hagen

Please be careful of the advice you get from coaches who are not based in the SEA region. Please check for active coaches on PrepLounge who are based in that region and write to them directly.

Run a filter on location and search for coaches: https://www.preplounge.com/en/case-interview-experts.php

Hi there,

The country is just as important as the region (Singapore is going to have different projects than Vietnam, for example).

In general, SE Asia has a good amount of banking, government, energy (incl. Oil & Gas) and other resources (mining). Again, it does depend on the country as well!

Best way to find out for your specific country + company is to check their website!

Unless you are talking about Middle East, this depends more on the country than on the region. As a general rule, you have less Industrial, Retail & Consumer goods, Pharma and Automotive than in Europe or the US, and more of the other (Banking, Energy, Telecom, Utilities, Infrastructure, Government). Mining and Oil&Gas really depending on the location.

Hi!

I'd say that there are probably some industries that are more relevant in the region but the amount of projects also depends on the specific company.

Hope this helps.

Best,

Anto

Hi,

This is an interesting question.

I would say that the type of projects you get is a function of a couple of things

  1. Maturity of the industry in the country/region
    • Generally - SEA is still a growth market and consulting is not as mature yet
    • Because of this, there is a higher chance of getting more ‘interesting’ projects vs very mature/saturated developed markets
    • At the same time, you may also get some types of projects which are quite ‘basic’ e.g. bringing client from 0 to 1 instead of from 3 to 5
  2. Make up of the local economy/industry landscape
    • There will be certain types of projects and clients that are more unique to SEA, for e.g. Family-owned conglomerates which form significant part of the local economies in some countries

Above is based on my ~9 years of experience in SEA and having talked to transfers/cross-officed staffed colleagues from developed markets
