Move from Big 4 Advisory into investment banking?

I have an offer from a Big 4 firm in Transaction Advisory but want to eventually move into IB. How hard is it to lateral in, and what’s the best strategy to make the switch?

From my perspective, transaction advisory at a Big 4 provides a solid foundation for moving into IB, but the transition can be competitive. Your best path is through valuations or financial DD, as these align closely with IB skill sets. Strong networking is essential, so start building relationships early, as many lateral hires happen through referrals. Additionally, refine your technical skills, particularly financial modeling and deal structuring. After 1-2 years, opportunities at boutiques or mid-market banks become more accessible, with the potential to move up from there. I'v seen colleagues make the move, so the transition is abolutely possible.
