Importance of CFA or financial modeling courses for IB

Hello,

maybe someone can help me. I'm considering getting a CFA Level 1 or taking a financial modeling course before recruiting. Are these actually useful for landing an IB role, or is networking and internships more important?

The CFA and financial modeling courses are highly valuable for investment banking (IB) as they:

  1. Enhance Financial Knowledge – Deep understanding of valuation, M&A, and financial analysis.
  2. Improve Technical Skills – Mastery of Excel modeling, DCF, LBO, and financial projections.
  3. Boost Career Prospects – Preferred by top IB firms for strong analytical and risk assessment skills.
  4. Provide Industry Credibility – CFA is globally recognized and respected in finance.
  5. Networking Opportunities – Connects you with finance professionals and recruiters.

As I am currently preparing for CFA Level 3 at Mirchawala's Hub of Accountancy with their experienced faculty.

Yeah, I definitely agree with the previous answer.

For landing an IB role, networking and internships are way more important than getting a CFA Level 1 or taking a financial modeling course. Banks mostly care about your experience, how well you can sell yourself, and who you know.

That being said, a CFA Level 1 can show you’re serious about finance and give you a solid foundation, but it’s not a must-have. Same goes for financial modeling courses – they’re great for building your skills and boosting confidence, but most banks will train you on their own models anyway.

If you have the time and interest, it won’t hurt, but definitely focus more on getting relevant internships and building your network – that’s what really gets your foot in the door.

Hope this helps! Let me know if you have more questions.

Both the CFA Level 1 and financial modeling courses can be helpful in landing an investment banking role, but they are secondary to internships and networking. The CFA Level 1 provides a solid foundation in finance but is not a major deciding factor for most IB roles, especially at the junior level. On the other hand, financial modeling courses are more directly relevant to the role, teaching practical skills such as building financial models and performing valuations, which can set you apart during interviews. However, the most important factors remain internships, which provide hands-on experience, and networking, which opens doors to opportunities. If you have the time and resources, taking a financial modeling course could be a valuable investment, but it should complement your networking efforts and internship experience.

I did get a CFA Level 1 and it definitely helped me feel more confident in interviews and on the job. It’s not necessary to land an IB role, but it shows commitment and gives you a good technical base. Networking and internships matter more, but if you have the time, I’d say it’s worth doing.
