How can I show leadership experience if I don't have any?

Many IB interviewers ask about leadership, but I haven’t held any major leadership positions in school or work. How can I still show my potential?

Hi there,

that a great question, because many people struggle with that! I also had issues with that, back in the days.

Even without formal leadership positions, there are many ways you can showcase your leadership potential. Leadership is all about responsibility, influence, and initiative, so here are a few things to highlight:

  • Group Projects: If you’ve taken the lead on any school projects or assignments, make sure to mention them. Leading a team to meet deadlines or solve problems is a great example of leadership.
  • Clubs or Societies: Were you involved in any student organizations or clubs, even in a smaller leadership role like committee member or event organizer? Those experiences show your ability to manage people and projects.
  • Sports Teams: If you’ve been a team captain or helped organize practices or events, that’s definitely leadership. It demonstrates your ability to motivate and guide a team.
  • Initiatives You’ve Led: Did you start or lead any initiatives outside of school, such as charity events, volunteer projects, or a small business? This shows you're proactive and can take charge.
  • Church or Community Involvement: If you've been active in your church or local community, like leading a youth group, organizing events, or helping manage outreach programs, those are valuable leadership experiences too.
  • Babysitting or Dog Walking: These might seem like small roles, but they show you’ve taken responsibility and been trusted with others' well-being. These are valuable qualities in a leader.

In interviews, always tie your experiences back to the skills you’ve gained and how they’ll help you succeed in the future. Leadership comes in many forms, and the key is demonstrating how you took charge, learned, and made an impact. If you need help framing it for your resume or interview, feel free to reach out!

Hey there,

I totally get where you’re coming from. I had the same concern when I was preparing for IB interviews. I hadn’t been a student president or managed a big team, but after all, leadership isn’t just about titles, it’s about taking initiative and influencing outcomes.

In my own interviews, I talked about times when I stepped up in group projects - like when no one was taking ownership, and I made sure we had a plan, delegated tasks, and got things done. I also mentioned times when I trained new interns at work, even in an unofficial capacity. If you’ve ever taken responsibility for something, solved problems, or guided others in any way, that’s leadership.

I hope that helps and let me know if you need any support in fine-tuning your answers. ?

Hi,
There are many ways to showcase your leadership potential, even if you haven’t held formal leadership positions. Focus on instances where you took initiative, whether it was volunteering for a challenging task, stepping in to solve a problem, or taking responsibility for the success of a project. You can also highlight times when you played a key role in collaborating with others, offering support, or helping your peers succeed. Leadership is not just about holding a title—it's about showing the ability to make decisions, take responsibility, and inspire those around you. By sharing these experiences, you can demonstrate that you possess important leadership qualities even without a formal role.
