trying to find resources for consulting/Struggle finding a mentor - Rising senior

Hi Everyone, I'm a rising senior and  I'm planning on re-recruting for consulting in the summer/fall! I've been using as many free resources as I can(Rocketblocks, management consulted, Case interview books, etc, but I still feel like i'm not where i should be for cases. Im wondering if there is anyone out there who knows of any amazing tools (hopefully that don't require money) that they have used to help them out! I go to UofM and i feel like all of the good resources are gatekept behind consulting clubs and such(which im not apart of).I'm also trying to find someone willing to mentor me and work with me throughout this process. I've been looking for some time and i haven't had any luck finding one. I'm all in on consulting and i'm hungry for success. Please feel free to reach out!

Free 15m intro call | First session -50% | Bain| Hiring team | 250+ successful candidates

Hi,

In order to best prepare for the interview, I would leverage

  • written sources: the ones you mentioned + adding case library Preplounge, Book/podcast Case interview secret...
  • doing mock cases with peers, for example via Preplounge :)
  • take some coaching sessions to really pin point your main points of improvements. This can really make the difference between offer/ no offer

Do not hesitate to reach out if you have further questions.

Thank you for the response! Do you have any recommendations for consulting prep podcasts? I've been trying to get into them but I haven't found any that are super useful. Thanks!

Hi there,

Your proactive approach to consulting preparation is commendable. Engaging with a mentor can significantly enhance your readiness for case interviews. Here are key benefits of practicing with a mentor:

Seek mentorship opportunities:
    1.    Expert Guidance: Mentors, often with consulting backgrounds, provide insights into case structuring and problem-solving, helping you think like a consultant.
    2.    Personalized Feedback: They identify your strengths and areas for improvement, offering tailored advice to refine your approach.
    3.    Realistic Mock Interviews: Simulating actual interview scenarios with a mentor builds confidence and improves performance under pressure.
    4.    Accountability and Motivation: Regular sessions with a mentor keep you disciplined and committed to your preparation schedule.

Leverage Free Case Interview Preparation Resources:
    •    CaseCoach’s Free Preparation Guide: Offers comprehensive insights into case interviews, including what to expect and how to prepare effectively.
    •    Management Consulted’s Free Case Interview Prep Course: Provides structured lessons on case interviews, covering various firms like McKinsey, BCG, and Bain.
    •    CaseInterview.com by Victor Cheng: Features video tutorials, case examples with solutions, and framework guides to help you master case interviews.
    •    MyConsultingCoach’s Free Case Library: Contains a variety of real case interviews across topics like market sizing, pricing, and profitability.

Engage in Peer-to-Peer Practice:

Practicing cases with peers can significantly enhance your skills. Platforms like PrepLounge offer opportunities to connect with other candidates for mock interviews and feedback.

Please feel free to reach out if you need further guidance!

Best,

Evelina

#1 rated McKinsey Coach

Apparently there are ChatGPT models now for the Premium account that do a good job of simulating the interaction.

If you want to go for the real deal you might want to consider a coach. This is close as you could possibly get from the interview experience and you'll get an honest assessment of where you are and how you can close the gap to being interview ready (if applicable).

Best,

Cristian

Hey there!

Go Blue!

My suggestions:

1. The free resources you mentioned are a great start. I personally found books like Case in Point pretty helpful

2. Practice cases with peers (incl. I would try to network with people that are in the consulting club; I am sure you have a friend of a friend who can introduce you to someone)

3. Some limited time with a coach can be highly valuable (admittedly also expensive)

Always happy to help out a fellow Wolverine :)

Hi there!

My suggestions:

1. Join these consulting groups and get access to the materials/ peers to practice with

2. Crafting cases has a really good free course, check it out

3. Hire a coach that will put you in the right path. The ROI is absurd and it is a totally personalized service, way more efficient than generic products.

Best,

Mari
