Seeking Practical Resources for Entry Test Preparation

Hello, my name is Simon. I've been preparing for consulting interviews over the past few months—practicing cases, doing math drills, and reading recommended books.

One area I find particularly challenging is the entry tests, especially those like McKinsey’s QST (Problem-Solving Test). I struggle with quickly reading and processing large amounts of data, filtering relevant information, understanding the question, and applying the right math under time pressure.

I really don’t want to miss my chance because of this. I'm specifically looking for practical resources—like workbooks or affordable platforms—that offer focused drills and realistic practice. I’m not looking for general tips like “read the question first” or “stay calm,” but rather materials that can help me actively improve my speed and accuracy.

If you know of anything that helped you or others, I’d really appreciate the recommendation!

Thanks in advance,
Simon

Hi Simon,
Totally get where you're coming from — the entry tests can be just as tough as the interviews themselves. Since you're on PrepLounge, definitely make use of the PST-style drills, math practice, and timed test simulations available here. They’re super close to the real thing and help build both speed and accuracy under pressure. Consistent practice on this platform really helped me level up. Good luck!

Hi Simon,

Thanks for sharing your prep journey - sounds like you’ve been putting in serious work already!

Just a quick heads-up: if you’re practicing for the McKinsey Problem-Solving Test (PST), you are preparing for the wrong thing. McKinsey actually retired the PST several years ago. What they use now is called the Solve Game (formerly known as the Digital Assessment or "Imbellus"). It's a very different format - more like a strategic simulation than a traditional test.

Here’s a quick breakdown of what the top firms are using these days:

  • McKinsey: Solve Game
  • BCG: Chatbot Online Case or Cognitive Test (varies by region)
  • Bain: SOVA assessment or TestGorilla (also varies)
  • Tier-2 firms: Usually a mix of logical, verbal, and quantitative reasoning - similar to SOVA, SHL, or even GMAT-style questions

If you look up the current names of these assessments, you’ll find lots of focused practice resources - both free and paid. For example, there are platforms that simulate the Solve Game experience, and others that offer GMAT-style drills tailored to SOVA or SHL formats.

I also offer prep materials and support for all the MBB tests and games - feel free to reach out if you'd like more info.

Best of luck with your prep,

Florian

Hi Simon,

Q: I'm specifically looking for practical resources—like workbooks or affordable platforms—that offer focused drills and realistic practice.

The most common tests at MBB are:

  • McKinsey: Solve Game
  • BCG: Online Case Chatbot, Quantitative Reasoning test, pymetrics (depends on the country)
  • Bain: SOVA, TestGorilla, pymetrics, plus others, usually similar to the old McKinsey PST (depends on the country)

The BCG and Bain ones are sometimes related to the old McKinsey PST (depends on the exact test), while the McKinsey Solve game is quite different.

For McKinsey and BCG, you can find some prep material below (full disclosure, I am the author):

▶ McKinsey Solve Game Combo Guide

▶ BCG Chatbot Software Simulation

If you have any questions about the tests, please feel free to drop me a message, I will reply within 12 hours.

Good luck!

Francesco

Hi!

Honestly the preplounge maths drills are great:

https://www.preplounge.com/en/mental-math

Get to know useful maths like break-even, pay-back period. You should memorise these formulas. I had 2 break-even questions in my McKiney interview process.

Happy to chat and good luck!
