Hi,

I have my McKinsey Interview for the Singapore office in a week.

I am still struggling with the inclusive leadership dimension. My main story is about my final school project (CEMS business project, a  consulting project) (I graduated a few months ago)

To sum it up, my story is about the following:

Situation: I was in a team with people from diverse study, working and cultural backgrounds

Problem: In the beginning of the project, although seemingly having aligned on the basic dimensions, we were encountering some problems, as we had 1.) different work morals, 2.) different quality of results, 3.) different levels of work experience 4.) team-struggles, such as language barriers, Asians do not want to lose their face and do not speak up, time-difference. We ran into a dead end and got bad feedback from Deloitte in the beginning
Solution: I stepped up as leader, analyzed the situation and our problems, and tried to implement mechanisms to drive us to success (for each of the problems). Hereby, I accounted for cultural differences, tried to be kind and inclusive, have an open ear for everyone, focused on how we can find measures so that everyone can work according to their strengths, learn, and we can be successful
Result: Highly successful, great grade, Deloitte implemented 7/12 out of our measures, had a tangible impact (need to quantify) on their brand image

My question: Is this a suitable story? The more I read, the more I am worried about two things
1.) Does there have to be a real conflict within the situation, or is it ok like I described? Ofc I will describe further and talk about how it was still important to make sure everyone is on track, feeling included.
2. Is this a leadership or a personal impact story?

Hi there,

Sounds like a great story! Let me take your questions one by one:

1) Conflict is not a must, especially for inclusive leadership, however, it does help. Any good story is basically the hero doing ok, then something bad happens, the hero is in trouble, then the hero does something and order is re-established. Not only is everything fine again, but the hero also changed and learned new things in the process. This is arc of pretty much any story (think of the last 10 movies you've seen). As a consequence, to make the story stick with the listener, it does help to emphasize the complexity of the situation, what made it difficult, why were the stakes high.

2. Is this a leadership or a personal impact story?

For now I see it as a leadership story, but you could turn it into either. The whole art is about how you choose to adjust the angle of telling the story. If it's about leadership you focus on your interactions with and impact on the team. If it's personal impact it's more about you individually persuading others or managing conflicts. All of these can be part of the same story, but it's on you to let it surface while recalling the experience.

Hope this makes sense!

Hi there,

thanks for sharing your experience with us. On a high level I think the situation may be a great fit for an inclusive leadership story. I have heard many such stories during my interviews. What is important how you shape the story.

1. There is no requirement for a conflict. What interviewers are looking for are that you overcame obstacles while working in a team. The lack of product quality, level of commitments etc. are a good depiction of that.

2. It will be critical for you to highlight why you did certain things to improve the team effectiveness and how you also reflected on your team mate's feelings/backgrounds. Be prepared to receive questions like “What did XYZ think in that moment”.

Happy to support you as sparring partner.

All the best

Freddy

Hi,

Inclusive leadership stories have 3 core elements to them

  1. Working in a diverse team environment (there are many diverse environments - it does not have to be gender based or nationality based it can even be working style like you have)
  2. There needs to be an express challenge relating to the diversity (for example not being able to work well together due to xyz reasons and only certain team members dominating conversation)
  3. Your solution needs to explain how engaged with the diverse groups helping them come together to solve the problem (focus on actions that showcase empathy and creativity)

Your answer has elements of all the 3 things above. I would emphasize the diversity element more (It cannot be things like quality of end output as that is not really related to diverse ways of thinking) and also expand on the solutions to address those challenges.

All the best in your interview,

Udayan

Dear candidate,

this is a great story and you can use it for both categories, it definetely works as a leadership story. If you have only limited examples then I would generally suggest, find the most difficult ones first, so entrepreneurship, then leadership then personal impact. Personal impact is so flexible you can use it for so much. But this is just a general suggestion. Of course if you are someone has a lot of entrepreneurship stories, then use a different order, but for most candidates the entrepreneurship stories are more “rare”.

Best regards

Hi there,

I think this is a great story!

I view it as a stronger inclusive leadership story than a personal impact story. It will be much easier to emphasize the inclusive leadership.

You definitely do not need to have conflict, but difficulty/tension that you worked through and resolved is important! Essentially, it can't be an easy team that solved itself - there have to be things that you took action on and drove (which it sounds like you have!)

Sounds like a great story.  Definitely sounds more like leadership based on how it’s currently framed.  If you choose a specific individual who you had to influence then in could also work as a personal impact story.
