How important is it to find a coach from the same region?

I'm finding it really hard to find a suitable interview coach from my own region. Most of the ones I'm seeing are either overcharging for their services or not experienced enough to coach.

I've been finding really solid offers, from really talented and well reviewed coaches, including reasonable coaching packages but from coaches that are situated elsewhere.

Is having a coach from the same region really all that important?

50% off 1st session. MBB Consultant. LBS MBA. 3+ years coaching experience. Practical coaching with in-depth feedback

Hi! I am confident that all coaches on this platform excel in the expertise that they provide so you will benefit from any of their sessions.

Having said that, besides the foundational prep and guidance, choosing a region-specific coach can sometimes help you better understand interview styles in the region, types of cases to expect, and how to best position yourself for success here because they have gone through the process themselves and potentially supported others too. I successfully recruited in the Middle East and am happy to support you with your needs - please feel free to reach out! I have over 150 hours of coaching experience.

Not really, no.

The fundamentals of MBB interviewing are the same whether you are interviewing in Dubai, London, or Singapore. Structured thinking, hypothesis-driven approach, clear communication. None of that changes by geography.

Where regional knowledge can help is in the fit interview, specifically the "why this office" question and understanding local market context. But that is something you can research yourself. You do not need a coach for that.

If you have found coaches who are experienced, well reviewed, and reasonably priced, that matters far more than where they are based. A great coach in a different country will do more for you than a mediocre local one.

Go with quality over geography.

At the end of the day, regardless of region, you should feel a good fit with your coach - especially if you're planning to engage in a longer term package (in which case you would be meeting them frequently).

The nice benefit of coaches from your own region is that they will truly understand the nuances of the region and be better able to guide you through it - because likely they went through it also.

Best way to sort this: do the free chat, if not convinced, ask for a trial session with a discounted rate to see how they coach during a full session. From there you should be able to see if there is a fit.

Happy to chat further if helpful!

I’d say that if the coach is credible (e.g. solid consulting career, real experience in coaching), location doesn’t really matter.

There are a few situations where it can make a small difference; for example if you need to practice in a specific language or if you want to discuss topics like networking where local culture may matter.

But for case interview preparation itself, the fundamentals are the same everywhere. In my experience (I’ve coached candidates across pretty much every continent), I haven’t seen meaningful differences in success rates depending on where the coach is based

That's a very common challenge, and it's smart of you to question whether regional alignment truly matters. You're right to prioritize quality and value in coaching.

Here's the reality: for case interview coaching, the region of your coach is largely irrelevant. The fundamental logic, frameworks, and problem-solving approaches tested in a case interview are globally consistent across all MBB firms. A "good" answer in London is a "good" answer in New York or Singapore. What truly makes a difference is a coach's ability to break down complex problems, provide precise feedback, and push you to think critically, regardless of where they are based.

Where regional insights can sometimes come into play is less about the case itself and more about the cultural nuances of a specific office, or understanding the local networking landscape. However, you can typically gather those insights through direct networking with consultants in your target office. Don't let geography be a barrier to finding an excellent case coach. If you've found talent and value elsewhere, lean into that.

Focus on a coach's direct experience, their ability to diagnose your specific weaknesses, and a style that resonates with you.

Hope it helps!

Hey!

It depends on the recruiting of the company! Some companies are having a recruiting process which is exactly the same around the world - here it does not matter!

If you are having a local boutique in mind which operates locally - I would recommend a local coach :)

Most important: make sure to have a coach who worked for the firm you are applying! That's my take, e.g., some coaches prep for McKinsey and have not worked there.. check Linkedin! :)

I work with candidates from across the world. We just align upfront on the times when we could make it work to meet and that's it.

It shouldn't be that complicated. Just reach out to them and align.

Best,

I can speak on McKinsey's process. There are times when you'll be given a regional specific case, although that's maybe 1 or 2 out of the 4 rounds. This is effectively testing you for at least surface-level knowledge of the region and its unique circumstances.

Although, as the other responses have already covered, the fundamentals of casing are the same for all offices.

Best of luck :)
