McKinsey PEI: How Recent Should My Story Be?

Hi,

The general rule of thumb is ~5 years recency. 

Of course the more recent the better. 

But why is this the case? Why does recency matter? It matters because interviewers are trying to understand what you bring to the table TODAY, which is of course a function of your past, but they need to be convinced that you still have this today.

Four to five years back is within range for a recent grad. However, two things would make me hesitate about your story:

1. A scholarship you worked for is a story with only you in it. Keep it only if you can rebuild it around the people in it. Who you had to convince, whose backing you needed, what you did when it looked like it would not come off.
2. I would privilege a story related to your professional experience, as that's closer to what you would be doing in consulting, as opposed to an academic-related story, which might read as a bit too far from reality.

By the way, prepare two stories per dimension. Being asked for a second example on the spot is common.

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your question:

• First of all, contrary to what other coaches have said, you should generally aim for the last 2-3 years, while 4-5 years is only acceptable yet not necessarily great for a simple reason: it implies that you haven't shown the traits to a similar extent ever since, or that you have simply not prepared well for the PEIs.
• Moreover, however, as a recent graduate you can still use one or two situations from your last year of high school if necessary. Interviewers know that young candidates have a shorter track record.
• Lastly, the age is often not the real issue with such situations, but the content. A scholarship earned through hard work alone can sound like "I studied a lot", and the PEI dimension "drive" is actually about how you tackled a challenging goal by overcoming complications along the way. Thus, I would strongly advise you to check honestly: does your situation focus on exactly these aspects?

the timeline is not an issue, up to 5y is valid as a proof point. 

However, make sure to bring some more depths to it than just stating "I worked hard and in the end it worked out". This is something the interviewers here almost always and it does not really distinguish you from the rest. Hence, try to bring in a small twist to stay memorable! 

Also, make sure to have 1-2 other back-up stories in case they drill down on other experience.

Absolutely! I would avoid having too many stories from high school, but one or two is perfectly fine.

Ideally, you have internships, projects, etc. that you can lean on for all of your other stories.

I would use the scholarship story if it is genuinely one of your strongest examples and you can show the actions you took, the obstacles you overcame, and what the story says about you.

The timeline is fine, however in general try to avoid stories that are too academic. If the story is about a entrepreneurial project or club project donewhile at school that is fine. Even better if internship, volunteering or freelance related. Pure academic is not necessarily recommended and you may not show the right characteristics with such a story.

McKinsey PEI has specific criteria which are not communicated to you, and "working hard" is not one. Working 80/20 is however as part of drive.

I’d avoid using it as your main McKinsey PEI story if you have a stronger university or professional example. Four to five years ago is not automatically too old, especially as a recent graduate, but McKinsey will generally get more value from seeing how you’ve demonstrated the same qualities more recently.

If it’s genuinely your strongest example and shows a significant challenge, your personal contribution, and a clear result, you can still use it. Just make sure you have more recent stories ready as well.

If possible, I would prioritise more recent stories. 

The stories should show you at your best and be a reflection of who you are as a person, and as a consequence the more recent they are, the more relevant they are.
