Hi all,

A couple of days ago, I had my first of the two interviews of the Final Round at McKinsey. However, I have just noticed that the status of my application went from ‘In-progress’ to ‘Closed’. What does this mean? Have they already offered the position to other candidates?  Or am I just overthinking it?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi there,

First of all, I am sorry to hear about the misleading information within your McKinsey recruiting process!

I think this is an interesting question that may be relevant for many people. I would be happy to share my thoughts on it:

  • I feel that you are overthinking it, given that it is most likely just a systems error. Therefore, I would advise you to reach out to the recruiter right away to inquire about the status of your application.
  • However, please keep in mind that the current tight economic situation has led to a recruiting slowdown and sometimes a freeze in strategy consulting, especially with McKinsey, which has recently canceled (sometimes with the motivation to reapply in September 2023) most of its recruiting activities.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to address your specific situation, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Hi there,

Maybe. Maybe not. We don't know.

Ultimately, you just need to wait a bit longer. I would reach out in another week or two.

Please don't sit around waiting. Apply to other firms!

Network, review your resume, keep casing (and fixing any issues that may have occured in your McK interview), etc.

Fingers crossed for you!

Hi there,

I would reach out to HR and ask for clarification before your next interview. Likely it is a mistake but you never know and you want to get clarity before going into the interview as doubts are never good for your performance.

Fingers crossed for a positive outcome!

Florian

Hi there,

This rather sounds like a system error. I wouldn't read too much into it.

Wait for them to reach out via a call with the result. Hope they will do so soon - I know the wait is rather painful.

In the meantime, it might make sense to also apply to a few other firms.

Best,
Cristian

Hello,

It could be either way.

I would suggest to start applying to other firms and try following up about your application in a couple of weeks if you still do not hear back from them.

All the best!

Hi there,

I know this kind of uncertainty is unpleasant. You have to wait until they officially reach out to you with their feedback. Everything else is speculation.

Keep applying to other firms as well if consulting is your career priority for the time being. You can always stop the recruiting process once you receive an offer you like but at least this way you won't lose any time.

Best of luck

Closed can either mean a rejection or it could just be a system update unrelated to your progress. The best bet is always to clarify with HR.
