Mc Kinsey Solve

Hello,

Yesterday I took solve and I am quite unhappy about my performance.
First game was easy, I managed to quickly put balanced ecosystem but I did a mistake choosing 4 traits for the location and only 2 were necessary.

Red rock was much harder than cases I practised. A lot of not so simple math I barely finished in time, I’m sure not all calculations are gonna be correct as I was doing it so fast.

Lastly, sea wolf, this one I am most unhappy about.. first site was super easy to clean, did it fast, however site 2 and 3 I couldn’t match the traits. I tried all combinations, it was not possible to match. I did like super close it was average 4.3 and range was 2-4…

What are my chances of scoring an R1 with this bad performance?
I hold MD degree, project manager certification and I have 5 y of experience in healthcare projects. I applied to JA position.

Hi there,

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your situation:

  • First of all, as long as you chose the correct location for the Ecosystem Island game, it shouldn't be a problem that you chose more than the two monitors required.
  • Moreover, regarding the Sea Wolf game, it seems to be quite common not to get 100% across all sites, but 90% should certainly be possible, based on the experience of my coachees.
  • Lastly, no matter how you feel about your performance, I'll keep my fingers crossed that it was enough to get invited to the interviews.

You can find more on this topic here: How to succeed in the final interview round

No, applying with a medical degree is not a turn off, but you should include something in your CV that shows that you are transitioning to business (if not anything else, some "coursera" courses can be a good option.

Hi there,

1) I did a mistake choosing 4 traits for the location and only 2 were necessary.

If you picked the correct location, this is not a problem.

2) I tried all combinations, it was not possible to match. I did like super close it was average 4.3 and range was 2-4…

It is possible that you cannot achieve a perfect score on a site. Therefore, this might also not be a problem.

From what you shared, it seems the main issue might have been Redrock. Even if your performance was not perfect, you might still pass, however no one external to McKinsey can confirm whether you will pass at this stage. Additionally, they will also consider the rest of your application material to make a decision.

Good luck!

Francesco

Hey there ?

Thanks for sharing so openly—honestly, you're not alone in feeling unsure after Solve! Many people walk away from it thinking they didn’t do well, but still move on to Round 1. The scoring is algorithm-based and looks at how you approach problems, not just getting everything perfect.

? For the Ecosystem game, choosing more traits than needed doesn’t necessarily penalize you if the chain is still stable and calorie-rich.
? Red Rock is designed to be fast-paced and tricky—partial credit is a thing, and what matters is how you approached the problems.
? Sea Wolf is the newest and toughest game—many candidates couldn’t find exact matches either. It's more about logic, prioritization, and structured thinking than perfection.

Your strong background (MD, PMP, 5 years in healthcare) is a huge plus for the Junior Associate role—McKinsey really values domain experts with implementation/project experience, especially in healthcare.

? My advice: stay hopeful, and use this time to start light case prep just in case! If you'd like support on that, I'm more than happy to help you prep for R1 too ?

Best,
Alessa ✨

Thank you for answering, I appreciate it. I must add, this is my first tryout at getting a job in consulting in MBB, it was definitely a good lesson and a good overview of what process may look like if I continue applying. Thinking more further about the games, really makes sense why they would put it as a part of selection process. I will definitely apply again next year if I don’t get a chance for R1 this year ?

Hi there,

Sorry to hear!

The Solve is usually analyzed in combination with the resume but you would have to show promise in both areas, so a strong resume would usually not outweigh a weak Solve performance.

Fingers crossed!

Cheers,

Florian
