I am going to start my MBA program this upcoming fall, through my network I have managed to secure a 3 month specialist contract assignment for a project at one of the top 3 firms ( MBB ) from May - July in ASIA. Any advice on if this would help me secure a full time offer in top management consulting post MBA, if yes then what are the things i should be doing in these 3 months to give myself the best chance.

Hi there,

Congratulations on landing the assignment, that's a great first step! In terms of your questions:

1) Any advice on if this would help me secure a full time offer in top management consulting post MBA

It could. You should verify with HR if there is an option for your particular office. Regardless, it is an excellent way to add a great brand to your CV.

2) If yes then what are the things i should be doing in these 3 months to give myself the best chance.

This is what I would recommend for a great start:

  1. Take notes during meetings/discussions with your manager – this will help you to remember details and will show you care about them to the team.
  2. Always double-check. The first impression is very important when you join a new company: if you show you are reliable from the beginning, you create a reputation of a reliable person. Double checks should be done on expectations for your job, your Excel analysis, your slides – basically everything.
  3. Define priorities before starting any set of tasks. The majority of the results usually come from a subset of activities – this is true also for your tasks in consulting. You have to identify which they are and prioritize them – the application of the so-called 80-20 rule or Pareto Principle. Alignment on priorities and expectations is particularly important with your manager at the beginning of the project.
  4. Socialize with your colleagues and start to build a network. You should build a good network within the company. A good start is key to develop good relationships long-term. More difficult to do during COVID – but there may still be opportunities for virtual gatherings. Try to take advantage of as many as possible to build connections.
  5. Organize your private life activities. You want to organize your calendar to leave some space for personal activities (sport/ friends/ family). This is not easy but can be managed if you organize well, and long-term will be critical to keep a balance between work and private life. Also, it is better to align with your manager/teammates from the beginning on your core needs, so that there are no surprises later on.
  6. Ask for feedback every two-three weeks – this will show you are proactive and willing to learn.
  7. Ask for help when you don't know what to do – better to let know you are in trouble with meeting a deadline than missing the deadline.
  8. Be social and respectful with the support staff – these people are great and influential as well in the company.

Yes yes and yes! this is a fantastic opportunity!

Regardless as to whether it is designed to lead directly to an offer, at a bare minimum it's 1) Content for your resume and 2) Networking

The advice here is really simple: Do a good job!

Work hard, learn actively, receive feedback openly. It's hard to summarize how to be good at your job in one Q&A, but it would not be a bad idea to get a coach to check in with periodically during your role! They can help you adjust and re-frame work so as to perform optimally during your time there.

Good luck!

Congratulations! You already have a foot in the door.

In your shoes, I would:

  1. First try to get a mapping as to who leads recruiting for your role locally.
  2. I would be transparent from day one and inform the recruiter your intention to do a great job and explore more permanent roles after your MBA.
  3. Ask the recruiter how a potential process would look like considering your 3-month stint (i.e., would you have to go through the normal process, would there be an expedited version for you, etc.).
  4. I would also ask if there is anything you can do during your project that can help you maximize your opportunity to rejoin in the future in a more permanent fashion.
  5. Inform your project teammates that it is your intent to do a great job and return in the future and ask them if they could provide you feedback at a frequency that suits everyone (they could be your biggest supporters internally if they enjoy your work and YOU as a person on the team)

That said, first and foremost ensure you enjoy the work, enjoy the team, and office. Make sure this is right for you. You are evaluating them as much as they are you. Don't overthink or stress - focus on the project and being part of a greater team and things will come naturally :-).

Congrats again and happy to talk more offline.

Daniel.

Top rated Case & PEI coach/Multiple real offers/McKinsey EM in New York /12 years recruiting experience

Hi,

Any opportunity to showcase your work, build strong working relationships and prove your skills is an opportunity to be hired full time. What you can do here is as follows

  • Try your best to over deliver where possible - they want to see hungry go-getters who will get the work done. The better your output, the more impressed your team will be with you
  • Spend time cultivating relationships with your coworkers - you will need all the support you can get to have them recommend you for a full time role and the best way to do that is to build relationships with them outside of just work
  • Make sure you impress the partners you are working with - they hold the most sway in terms of hiring. Try and get opportunities to problem solve with them, to present your work to them and to get any time with them to build relationships
  • Be enthusiastic and help out wherever possible - for example, if others on your team are busy but you are done for the day, genuinely offer to help them with any tasks that they can outsource to you. Or if the team is too busy to order dinner, be the person that takes on that responsibility for the team
  • Bring good energy to the role - As the junior most team member, it is your responsibility to bring high energy and positive vibes to a team. People who have been in consulting for a while tend to be tired and sometimes low energy, so any contributions you can have on this will be seen as a huge positive.

This is a great opportunity for you to shine and I hope it goes very well!

Udayan

#1 rated MBB & McKinsey Coach

Hi there,

This is amazing! Congrats and best of luck!

If there's one thing I'd focus on, it's be coachable. That is, be willing to try, experiment, fail, learn and then start again, constantly integrating the feedback that you receive. People are more impressed by people who get better faster than by those who are just good but don't show incremental promise.

I wrote an article about how to best handle your first few months in the firm. It should be helpful for you - https://www.preplounge.com/en/articles/entry-level-consultant-what-is-it-like

Empathic coach, former McKinsey Engagement Manager |Secure offers from top consulting firms

Dear candidate,

yes this could much help you. Learn the most you can as you go through your project and network all throughout. Make the best impression you can, sometimes offers are given, although usually they are given in case the person can start right away but there can be a clear indication from them on whether you would be a great fit for the firm. They will definetely watch your performance. Important will be also:

- Communicating structuredly, and in a top down way throughout

- Staying organised and on top of things, being in full command of your work stream

- Great work with clients and with other team members, ensure you have talking time when partners are present and can add value

Enjoy your time. Best regards,

Charlotte

Hi there,

This is indeed a fantastic opportunity!

Make sure you do two things during this time:

  • Perform high and make sure it's noticed by the people you want to impress
  • Network as much as you possibly can and be clear about your intentions

If you do this, you will absolutely lay the groundwork for later FT opportunities!

Best of luck!
