Hi Everyone, 

 

I'm invited to HR interview (McKinsey), can you help me how to prepare, what type of questions might be asked? how to answer them successfully?

I really need your help,

Congrats on getting the HR interview??

Don't stress about it and be yourself. Purpose of the call is most likely to get to know you better and give you some info about the role and interview process.

Some typical questions will be:

  • Your previous experience
  • Why you are interested in consulting and more specifically McKinsey
  • What you want to achieve at McKinsey and whether there are any specific industries you are interested
  • Some other typical HR questions: visa status/sponsorship if that applies to you

Do use the opportunity to ask questions back, including but not limited to:

  • The overall interview process and timeline
  • Career progression at the firm
  • International mobility
  • Apprenticeship culture

A bunch of my candidates go through this periodically.

These types of interviews are usually very different from the real case interviews conducted by consultants. They have a couple of parts:

1. HR introducing the role, the recruiting and interview logistics

2. Couple of questions to you, typical fit-style, NO PEI 

  • Why consulting?
  • Why McKinsey?
  • Guide me through your resume?
  • What have you done in your previous role that would benefit us in practice / industry X?

3. Questions you might have for HR

Those interviews are usually very easy and more about the actual fit with your experience / the role and to update you further on the next steps.

Hi there,

this is likely just the introductory interview to determine if the role you are apply to is generally the right fit for you. The HR person will probably tell you more about the actual role and what they are looking for. They'll want to know about your background, motivation regarding consulting and potentially also why McK. These types of interviews typically do not involve a case.

While this is often a rather procedural type of interview, you should still treat it as official part of the recruiting process and take it seriously. From there on out, you can expect that any type of interaction you have with the company will be used to “assess” you in one way or another.

This upfront convo with HR is not part of the formal assessment.

It's typically used to either discuss what role you should be applying for, to explain to you the recruitment process or to align on the interview dates and clarify any other questions you might have.

In that sense, make sure that you spend some time upfront getting clarity on what you want to understand better. The recruiter will be there to answer your questions.

  • First of all, this short conversation with the recruiter is typically not assessed.
  • Moreover, you should practice typical personal fit questions, but you will not be asked about a PEI dimension.
  • Lastly, I would advise you to prepare any questions you have for the recruiter.

This is not really an assessment, although it has the objective of making sure that both parties are aligned, i.e., you know what role you are applying to, and confirm that you are interested. Of course that means that you have to explain why you are interested. 

Being prepared to explain:

  • Your resume
  • Why you would be a good fit for consulting
  • Why you want to work in consulting
  • Why you want that specific firm…

… as well as any questions you may have about the role, office or company) is what is required at this stage.
