MBB Career: Too Late with Job-Hopping History?

I have changed jobs several times in the past and recently left a senior manager position. My work experience includes time at both Big 4 and tier 3 tech companies. Over the last 5 years(total experience 13 yoe), I have switched jobs frequently in search of the right fit. I have observed that individuals who joined MBB firms have stayed with their companies for at least 5 years and have experienced significant growth, as well as greater flexibility and more interesting projects. Is it too late for me to consider a career at an MBB firm, and will my job-hopping history and recent career break be a hindrance? Is it just better to not try MBB and continue with other firms?

Hello,

It's not too late at all. Job-hopping is not an issue in and of itself - it's all going to be about how you position yourself and what narrative you present. If you're interested in working at MBB, go for it! Just be sure to carefully think about what story you are going to tell based on your resume. Working with a career coach to walk through and polish your narrative would be a good idea too.

Hi there,

Happy to share my thoughts on this.

  • Job hopping will not be an issue. Consulting recruiters typically don't care about that. It's more of an industry phenomenon (as such firms have less staff turnover and are less flexible in their hiring).
  • Tenure: With regards to your extensive work experience (13 years), this could potentially be an issue for some bigger firms, if the roles you apply to are too junior. Really depends on your specific experience and prior seniority though

Feel free to share your CV via DM then I can have a quick look and advise specifically.

Hope this helps.

Regards, Andi

Hi there,

1) Is it too late for me to consider a career at an MBB firm?

It depends on your goals. If you are fine with joining a position lower than the current one you have and a consulting career aligns with your goals, it could still make sense.

2) Will my job-hopping history and recent career break be a hindrance? Is it just better to not try MBB and continue with other firms?

If you structure properly your CV there should not be issues with your past experiences.

If you are targeting consulting, I would also expand the search to Tier 2 companies.

Hope this helps,

Francesco

Hi there,

The fact that you've switched careers often doesn't have to be a problem.

At the end of the day, it matters how you choose to communicate it in your CV and cover letter. Consider getting a coach to help you develop and sharpen your individual story and value proposition so it comes out in the best way in the applications.

And if you're thinking of getting into MBB, take a look at the following guide that breaks down the most important steps to consider when building an application strategy:
