Hi there,

Just had a weird experience with PwC Middle East.

I was referred to the graduate consulting role and completed the assessments almost two months ago.

The person who referred me checked on my application multiple times.

Today, when this person went to check on my application, they found that it was removed from the system and no reasoning was given even to them as the person who gave the referral.

I have not received any email confirming the rejection but logged into the PWC portal to find the following message:
Thank you for your interest in this position. We have decided to pursue other candidates.

This message was dated today meaning it was probably put in the system after the person who referred me checked on the status with them.

Is this normal?

Hi there,

Sorry to hear about the rejection. In terms of your question:

Q: I have not received any email confirming the rejection but logged into the PWC portal to find the following message: “Thank you for your interest in this position. We have decided to pursue other candidates”. Is this normal?

This is not normal in the sense that they should also let you know via email. However some companies in the Middle East are known to be slow in providing feedback, so unfortunately 2 months for feedback is not unusual.

In terms of the next steps I would recommend the following:

  1. Contact the person who referred you to ask for feedback on possible improvements (to be verified with HR)
  2. Check for possible improvements in your CV/Cover
  3. Apply to other consulting firms (if possible with referrals)
  4. If nothing works, wait until the end of the ban period
  5. Update your CV to reflect the activities you have done in the meantime
  6. Find a referral for your application and apply again

Hope this helps,

Francesco

Hi there,

Really sorry to hear about this - not fun :/

That said, this is why it's so important to apply to dozens of firms. Please don't sit and wait for 1 application to maybe turn out (maybe you didn't do this, but it's so important to not pin all hopes on one application).

In terms of what exactly happened, who knows, but it won't change anything. It's likely they hired who they needed. It's possible they decided not to hire. It's possible a decision was made earlier and just updated today.

Alas, nothing you can really do…for this application. What can you do though? You guessed it! Get networking and applying to dozens of other firms. While you're at it, make sure you're resume is as good as it can be and get a coach to review it.

Hi there,

Sorry to hear this - this sounds confusing indeed.

Realistically though, (and you might not enjoy hearing this), there's not much that you can do about it. What happened most likely is that they forgot to update your application status and only did it now.

My recommendation would be to go ahead and apply to other firms. Aim to do so wider, approaching the process as a portfolio (seek to diversify).

Here is a guide a wrote that explains how to do this in more detail:

Best,
Cristian

Hello,

I'm sorry to hear this, it is clearly a frustrating situation to find yourself in. That being said, there's not much you can do about it at this stage. If you want, you could ask the person who referred you to reach out to HR and see if they can get some rationale for your outcome, but unfortunately it is just the case that these firms receive a lot of applications, their decision processes can be obscure, and they're not always the best at communicating. I advise you to keep applying to other positions. The recruiting process can be unclear and frustrating, and decisions can sometimes make little sense from your perspective, but don't let one experience demotivate you. Best of luck!

This is frustrating - but the fact is that you were rejected. You have to try at different firms.
