I'm currently in sales at a SaaS company and have been looking to make a career change into (Management) Consulting. Through my research, it seems that there are a lot of subcategories under the "Management" Consulting umbrella, between which the definition/relevance of management consulting seems to be blurred.

I've been looking at a lot of different firms and positions, some of which do a good job of describing the roles/ specialties explored within the role, some not so much. I'm hoping to get some context on the type of firm/ position that would align with what I'm looking for in a consulting career.

My ideal role would involve creative problem solving for broad business issues. [As an example; a client that makes VR headsets and is trying to increase user adoption. Finding a solution such as converting their product to a subscription model + aiming to form partnerships with developers to increase quality/ utility of their VR game offerings.] [Another example: A company with a mobile app is looking to increase their userbase. Recommending changes to design/UI to simplify functions + rebranding to address a new, more exploitable market.]- These are both examples of the types of problems/ solutions that would interest me in a consulting career.

I have a positive vision of Design/Creative consulting in terms of brand, marketing, product, etc., however I'm not sure if this specialty is as well compensated as others and if it is too specialized to provide a wide breadth of lateral opportunities down the road. I think the ideal role would involve problem solving using a blend of rebranding/redesign, strategy changes, marketing changes, etc.

I've seen openings at firms that seem to fit this mold; however a lot of them will specialize in a few industries (ex: Capgemini [Invent] seemed to focus on consumer products, retail, auto, life sciences and financial) which is undesirable as I'm hoping to get as much exposure in different fields as possible.

To summarize, I'm looking for a position where I can solve a wide array of business problems through a wide array of creative, out-of-the-box solutions (rebranding, design, strategy, etc.) at a firm that services a wide variety of clients (not just sticking to a few target industries). From your experience, what roles/ firms fit this description?

Let me try to answer your question as straightforwardly as I can.

Management consulting is many things.
There is “Strategy Consulting” where you have McKinsey, Bain, BCG, AlixPartners, Roland Berger, Oliver Wyman, and some less interesting strategy boutiques. There most of the work is with senior clients at quite large firms. In those companies usually, people are more and more assigned to some industry or function-specific practice.

Then there are Big4, Accenture, Capgemini, etc. There you mostly work with middle-manager and you focus on projects that are much less strategic. Also, overall compensation and career opportunities are less interesting.

What you describe as an interest of yours fits mostly with Big4-like or Digital Practice at MBB.

MBB are much more selective in hiring, your job is usually more challenging, and you work 3-4 hours per day more (and sometimes over the weekend).

What I wrote is just an oversimplification but quite accurate regarding the key differences.
hence, you should clarify to yourself what your ambitions/aspirations are. In case you decide to try to join MBB or similar, just be aware that you should embark in a preparation process that requires some time and devotion.

Hi there,

Here are some tips for clear communication + increasing response rates (important in consulting):

  1. Lead with your question
  2. Bold your question
  3. Cut text - only include what we actually need to hear (otherwise people will see a huge blob of text and not respond).

Now, you're basically describing consulting! In particular, you're describing a generalist role in a strategy consulting firm. For example, McKinsey and BCG.

It's important that you start networking as well! Picking up the phone and actually having conversations with people across these industries/companies will give you a much better idea of what will work best for you!

Hello,

A few additional thoughts to some of your specific points

  • “wide array of business problems” and “wide variety of clients” → consulting is in many ways a game of scale, the larger the firm the more varied the types of cases, clients and capabilities. So you would be looking to join the bigger firms in your specific geography
  • “wide array of creative, out-of-the-box solutions” → in reality this is very case dependent and not all client problems really require ‘creative’ solutions, so its important to have a realistic understanding of the type of work being done by a specific firm

What Ian has mentioned is absolutely important - you have to speak to people working in the specific geographies and offices you are considering. Websites don't always capture the realities or nuances on the ground. A ‘top’ global firm may not always be the most diverse/varied firm in a specific locality.

You seem to be looking for something quite specific. It's kind of hit or miss for us to know one such company…

So three options:

- Digital teams within Strategy firms (broad business problems, not sure the topics you are looking for with the problems you are looking for)

- Digital teams within Big 4 (broad problems with a high operational aspect. Might have more the kind of detail you want, but on the other hand there's some tendency to apply and reapply methodologies in those firms… make sure you like their methodology)

- Specific Boutiques (you have to go search one by one, but you might be able to find something that better matches your description).

Hey there,

What you are looking for is Digital Consulting! At least based on the examples you described. “Usual" strategy consulting will be  different but digital teams of strategy houses or Big4 or Accenture or… will have something similar that you are looking for. They (all) typically also have innovation labs or similar to focus  specifically on innovative ideas.

The level you will be interacting with (C-Level or below) is also highly dependent on team/partner and their/his/her network and not necessarily on whether MBB or not. I've seen (and myself led) projects with C-Level out of Big4, but also the other way around, interviewed line employees as well. So it really depends.

If I were you, I would ask in the interview process the industry split and also the level you would be interacting with. They usually don't lie just put it in a diplomatic sugar coat.

Also, I can really recommend the app "Fishbowl" to get to experience the company culture(s). It's quite heavily focused on the US but you can really see the difference in attitudes and they certain companies think while reading comments of real life employees (without the sugar coat).

I wish the best of luck to you!

Best,

Agnes
