Expert Position Location

Hi all,

I am interviewing for an expert role and I want to locate in NYC because my partner lives here. The HR however told me that the NY office is not an option for this position. I wonder if I can negotiate it with the partner? Is this usually possible?

Hello,

This will depend on the structure of your firm. For MBB at least, job offers are usually posted for specific office locations. It is possible to transfer, however that usually takes time and a lot of networking, particularly for competitive offices, which NY tends to be.

At the interview stage, I think negotiation with HR is usually the way to go, if you explain your situation. The partners don't know you yet and won't have much rationale to advocate for you to get moved to NY. Down the line, once you have worked for those partners, had them see your work and developed a stronger relationship with them, it is sometimes possible to get them to advocate for you for alternative work arrangements, but this is all on a personal basis, there is no rule of thumb.

In your case, I would advise trying to have a detailed conversation with HR, explaining the situation with your partner. If they continue to say no, I don't think there's any harm in gently asking a partner what they would recommend / whether they think transferring to NY could possibly be an option at this stage. I don't think it would be appropriate to push it much if they don't seem willing to accommodate unfortunately.

Update: I got the offer from M. Now what should I do to negotiate about it? How far should I push?

Hi there,

If they said it's not possible, it's 80% likely that it's not possible.

However, what I would do is to try and get the offer and then negotiate afterwards. This way they will also be more invested in the process. At least try to find a flexible arrangement in terms of travel so you can split your time between locations so that over the coming year or so you could arrange a full-time transfer. It's not going to be easy though, but also not impossible.

Best,

Cristian

Hi there,

Unfortunately if they say it's not possible it's not possible!

You can try to speak to the partner if you have a good relationship, but, honestly, I'd only try this after the interview is concluded.

Once you actually have an offer you have a lot more leverage and can negotiate!

There may also be a situation where your company office is in x city, but you still live in NYC. This will be tough, but you can always fly there Mon-Fri

Hello!

Yes, 100%. I have heard the same from HR and evn from the business at the beginning of a process.

however, the way to go is doing the interviews, impressing them, getting the offer… and only then negotiate, when you have some bargaining power. Now, it would be useless.

Hope it helps!

Cheers,

Clara

Hey there,

You could always try, partners will have more power to change role constructs than HR teams and if they really need your skills they can move things around to accommodate. However, if they are hiring you for specific client project requirements in a different city/state then it might not make sense for them to have you posted in NYC.

Thanks

You can try to negotiate that, although it is more about being able to work remotely part of the time than about being hired for a different office (which would be much harder). In any case, the odds is that it simply is not possible.

Hi there,

You need to prioritize and sequence things right and in that sense your proposal makes sense:

  1. Get the offer
  2. Negotiate location

You may not get what you want if you do 1. → 2. (in fact it seems unlikely) but you're definitely not going to get what you want if you do 2.→ 1.

I say go for it! Best of luck!
