If I start to work for a consulting firm and then switch to another little after, do I get in the network anyway?

a) what does being an ex-bcger, ex-Roland Berger... imply exactly? Being able to use a platform where your contact details appear in an alumni list?

b) if you go to a competitor you are still able to leverage your previous firm alumni network? Is there any advantage?

c) is there any limit in terms of timing of working period at a firm or any sort of similar thing in order to get into the alumni group? (For instance summer internship does not work)

McKinsey Senior EM & BCG Consultant | Interviewer at McK & BCG for 7 years | Coached 350+ candidates secure MBB offers

Hi Anonymous,

I can give you my experience: I left BCG in 2013 to join McKinsey. As a consequence, I was still listed in he BCG alumni directory, but I could not use the full functionality of the alumni website/platform (e.g., I could not search for alumni, I could not see job postings etc. I would also not get invitations for BCG Alumni events; however, other BCG alumni could see my profile and some reached out with specific questions over the years). BCG explained to me that this is their policy for all alumni who work for direct competitors.

I left McKinsey a couple of months ago, and as a consequence I was "upgraded" to a full member of the BCG alumni community.

Hope this helps! Sidi

HI,

a). Alumni network at consulting is similar to network at school. This is basically made of people who shared at some point the experience, and that you can contact directly to ask them whatever you want with no garantee they will help. Of course depending on the firm the network is stronger and more willing to help (e.g. McK)

b)c) Basically an alumni network is made of people who are not working for the company anymore. so if they are willing to help because of your common eexperience they might not care as much about your next move. So my opinion is that it wont be a problem

Best
