McKinsey referral link and application

Hi everyone!

I was recently referred to McKinsey, but I’m running into a few complications and would really appreciate some insights.

I received a referral link that mentioned it would be valid for 30 days. I’ve already opened the link and started my application (so it now shows as “saved,” but not yet submitted). However, the referral was unfortunately for the wrong position (full time instead of internship), and my home office doesn’t appear in the system when selecting preferred offices. It seems they do not have any openings as of now.

To make things more complicated, the person who referred me seems quite busy and hasn’t been responsive lately, so I can’t ask them for a new referral. The deadline for the link is up in a couple days, and I don't feel like my resume is quite ready to be handed in as of now as well.

My main questions are:

  • If the referral link expires after 30 days, does that mean I need to fully submit the application before then for the referral to count, or is saving the application after filling a few fields enough to keep it active?

  • If I apply using the saved version after 30 days, will the referral still be associated with my application?

  • Would it be smarter to go ahead and apply now (even with the errors) and then reach out to HR to fix the office/position details later? Or would it be better to not apply and ask HR for an extension on the deadline and/or fix the referral with them to use it at an appropriate time when they have openings?

I’d really appreciate any guidance from people who’ve dealt with a similar McKinsey referral situation — especially around how these 30-day links work.
    Thanks in advance!

Hi there,

This is a bit of an annoying situation, but it’s manageable.

On the referral link: in most cases, the referral is only “locked in” once you submit the application. Just saving a draft usually isn’t enough, so if the link expires, there’s a real risk the referral won’t carry through.

That said, I wouldn’t rush to submit an application that is for the wrong role and office — that can create more friction later and is harder to fix than people think.

The better move here is to reach out directly to recruiting. Keep it short and practical: explain that

  • you received a referral for the wrong role
  • your target office isn’t currently visible
  • your link is about to expire

Ask if they can either extend the link or reissue it once the correct role opens. This is a pretty common situation, and recruiters can usually fix it on their end.

If timing becomes tight and you don’t hear back, a fallback option is to submit and then immediately email recruiting to correct it — but this is second best.

Big picture: the referral itself matters less than applying to the right role, office, and with a strong CV. Don’t compromise those just to use the link.

Happy to help you quickly sense-check your CV before you submit if useful

Thank you for your reply!

I've sent an e-mail, but I fear they won't reply in time, as the deadline is in the next couple of days. Do you think the link can be reissued if it shows I sent the e-mail in time but it expires in the meantime? Or should I just apply and contact HR if they don't reply by deadline day?

Update: the referral link is "used up" as I have saved my application. The dashboard says I have 7 days to submit it before it gets deleted. I'm assuming the referral its is not linked to the 30 days, but rather the link only?

Hi there,

Here is what I would do in your shoes:

Don't submit a half-ready application just to beat the deadline. A weak resume under a referral is not better than a strong one submitted cold!

Contact McKinsey HR directly today. Explain the three issues clearly: wrong position, preferred office not available, and expiring link. They handle referral complications regularly and can often extend or reassign (your referrer on the other hand won't be able to do much on this regard).

Bottom line: one email to HR today probably solves all three problems at once. Don't overthink it.

If you'd like help polishing your resume before you submit or have questions on how to approach the application, feel free to DM me, happy to help.

McKinsey's referral system is not fully transparent, and anyone who gives you a precise answer on how the 30-day link works technically is guessing.

That said, here is the practical advice based on what I have seen with candidates I have coached.

Do not submit a half-ready application just to beat a deadline. A weak resume submitted under a referral is not better than a strong resume submitted cold. The referral gets you a closer look, but the resume still has to hold up.

Contact McKinsey HR directly. Explain the situation: wrong position, no openings for your preferred office, link expiring. They deal with referral complications more often than you would think and can usually extend or reassign. Be straightforward, not apologetic.

On the referral association question: once you have opened and saved the application through the link, the referral is likely already tagged to your profile in their system. Submitting after 30 days probably does not erase that, but HR can confirm.

Bottom line: reach out to HR today, explain the three issues clearly, and ask for guidance. That is a better move than submitting something premature.

It sounds like a really frustrating situation to navigate with the referral, and you're right to be asking these questions. It's a common dilemma when you're trying to leverage a connection but the mechanics are a bit fuzzy.

While opening and saving the application likely links your profile to the referrer in their system, the actual benefit of the referral — getting your application prioritized or flagged for review — almost universally only applies once you fully submit. More importantly, applying for the wrong role (full-time vs. internship) or a position at an office that explicitly shows no open requisitions for your target can actually work against you. The system will route your application to the full-time pipeline, which won't be reviewed by the internship recruiters, and an office with no openings means there's no active bucket for it to fall into. It's a dead end for what you actually want.

My strong recommendation would be not to submit this application. Even with a referral, applying for the wrong role or to an office that doesn't currently have openings for your desired internship means it's highly unlikely to be reviewed for what you actually want. It's much better to preserve a 'clean slate' in the system for when the right opportunity arises. Instead, use this time to polish your resume and, critically, focus on securing a new referral that is directly aligned to the correct internship role and office. If your initial referrer is unresponsive, broaden your network to find another champion. Recruitment cycles for internships are quite specific, so 'no openings' often means waiting for the next cycle to begin.

Hope this clarifies things a bit! All the best.

Hi there!

First off, don't panic - system quirks like this happen more often than you'd think.

I suggest to reach out to McKinsey HR asap. Just explain the situation with the wrong role and office, and ask if they can grant an extension or advise you on whether a new link is needed. Reaching out actually works in your favor because it shows you are proactive.

Just as a quick heads-up: the application does need to be fully submitted to lock in the referral; simply saving it unfortunately isn't enough.

Best of luck getting it sorted out! :)

Thank you for the quick reply!

Would you recommend me still applying with what I currently have to make use of the referral and update my information after submitting to refine parts of my applications I didn't have the time to do yet? Or would it be better to just not apply and let it expire, reaching out to HR for an extension. I do not believe there's a chance of HR replying in time before the deadline.

hey there :)

for McKinsey & Company referrals, the link usually only counts if you submit within the 30 days, just saving it is typically not enough and after expiry the referral is often lost

in your case I would not submit with wrong role/office, that can create admin issues and hurt matching later; instead quickly email recruiting/HR, explain the situation and ask for either an extension or to reissue the referral for the correct role, they’re usually responsive to this

if timing is tight and your CV isn’t ready anyway, better to fix it properly than rush a suboptimal application

happy to help refine your CV quickly if useful

best,
Alessa :)

You're over-complicating this: Just call/email the office + the recruiter + the person who referred you.

You need a multi-pronged approach.

Then, think about it from their perspective? Will they just void your referral link if you have a screenshot of the issue?

And take a minute to step back and think "boy, the job itself is going to be hundreds of super stressful, high stakes, daily decisions / issues more complicated than this that I'll need to work through on my own. How can I change how I approach issues / problems without being hand held to make sure I succeed on this job"

Not saying you won't be good at the job! But I have a bit of a red alarm going off reading this post.

Ah, that sounds annoying. I'm sorry to hear.

Reach out directly to the recruiter in the office you're targeting and get them to help. If they don't respond over email, try over linkedin. If that doesn't work, get in touch with a consultant from that office and ask them kindly to put you in touch with the recruiter.

Only if you're not getting a response, then still submit the application and seek to correct it afterwards.

Best,
Cristian

Thank you for your reply!

I've sent an e-mail to the recruitment e-mail listed (and given by the reception after calling), but I fear they won't reply in time, as the deadline is in the next couple of days. Would you recommend me transferring the e-mail to the recruiters' e-mails directly or would that be perceived negatively. I don't want to be too pushy, and I'm assuming they'll check the recruitment e-mail as fast as their personal one.

I'm assuming the referral its is not linked to the 30 days, but rather the link only (?).

Hi there,

That definitely sounds frustrating. My suggestion is to reach out to someone in the office that you're targeting for, for direct assistance.
