MBB Ban Period

Hi there,

I applied to MBB, on a whim, for the undergraduate summer internship role (London) in late December last year… poor choice, as I was unaware at the time that by that time, roles had already been filled, given applications open in mid-September and the interview process runs through the end of November/early Dec.

Since then, I've decided that consulting is something I really do want to pursue, looking towards the full-time role upon graduation. I've prepared a great deal since then, spoken to a few consultants, practiced casing, and all the rest.

However, I'm worried about the reapplication ban- I understand they typically last about 12 months or so. If I'm submitting an application in mid-September this year for the full-time role once applications open, does that mean I'm banned from applying given I applied in December for the internship?

Quite worried about this- because I really hope all my prep hasn't been in vain…

Hi there,

Try not to sweat this too much - you live you learn! (just make sure you learn :) )

If you are applying to a different role (full time, not internship), then you should be just fine. This is especially true if this is via school recruiting and their channels (i.e. their job portal).

Please make sure you're not just banking on MBB. If you really want consulting, apply to 30-40 firms in this round to make sure your apps really count! Also make sure you're networking properly.

Hi there!

Sorry to hear about this situation.

Yes, the 12 month ban applies in almost all geographies.

But it's not set in stone. Basically, they set this duration because they consider this the minimum duration necessary for you to have made the required personal upgrades to make it worth interviewing you again.

If you feel like you've made significant progress in the meantime, then you could reach out to the recruiter and see if you can get a second short earlier.

Aside from this, make sure that you apply to all the other top firms. You need a portfolio approach not have all your eggs in one basket.

I've advoted for this at length in the following article. Hope you will find it useful:

Best,
Cristian

Hi there,

Q: If I'm submitting an application in mid-September this year for the full-time role once applications open, does that mean I'm banned from applying given I applied in December for the internship?

If you applied for an internship, the ban usually doesn't hold for full-time.

If that was not indicated in the rejection email, the best way to find out is to find a referral and ask if they can check with the local HR (this will also increase your chances). If they confirm that's fine, you can apply earlier; otherwise, you can wait for the period they recommend.

Good luck!

Hello,

It's true that the typical reapplication ban is 12 months as you point out. However, if you were unsuccessful in an internship application, you should be able to apply for a full-time position the following year. So yes, you should be eligible to apply.

Hi,

internship and full-time applications are usually different channels so that a ban doesn’t extend. However, best to clarify with the recruiter.

Good luck

Ban doesn't apply to internships, i.e., when you finish your degree (or when the next intership period opens) you are free to apply again.

Hi there,

internship and full-time applications are usually treated separately - in other words, a rejection for the internship might now ban you from a full-time application. However, it really depends on what the firm communicted to you in terms of ban period, as it can vary across candidates.

To be sure, can always check with HR on what your current status is. No harm in doing that.

Regards, Andi
