Interviewer not taking notes?

Hi there,

I just had the final round with one of the MBB and my second interviewers didn‘t take any notes at all. Is this normal or am I doomed?

Some contexts: I was the last interviewee of the day. The case was a wild card and the interview was quite conversational. It actually ran a bit overtime but the interviewer said he was happy to take my questions and overall seemed pleased. My previous interviewer however, took thorough notes.

Hi there,

I almost never say how I think an interview went, but I actually view this is a good sign.

First, remember that this could just be stylistic. Some interviewers are “mean” to everyone. Some are “nice” to everyone. Some move really quick and rush. Others sit there and don't say much. This interview might just not take notes.

However, it's possible they decided pretty early on and did not need to take notes.

Basically, don't worry. If you did well and they liked you you'll be hired. If you didn't, you won't. But no notes isn't something inherently bad.

Fingers crossed for you!

Hello Dear,

first of all well done!

Generally speaking I would say that there is no a standard: some interviewers take notes, others not.
According to my experience, more seniors are less probable is that they take notes.

I would say that your 6 sense and perception on how the interview went is a much more accurate indicator.

Good luck!

Matteo

Hi there,

I would not read too much into it. Every person is a bit different. Some need to take notes so they don't forget things, others rather stay more attentive throughout the interview and take summary notes afterwards. In any case, every interviewer usually has to provide some form of written evaluation of the candidate to HR.

So just because your interviewer did not take any notes during the conversation does not mean that he didn't care about what you had to say.

You'll just have to wait for the official feedback.

Fingers crossed

This could mean they have already made up their mind about you.

In addition, if this was with a partner or AP, they have different standards for interviewing (i.e., they can do whatever they want during the interview).

Overall, try not to think too much about it and grab a drink and try your best to relax. It's quite an accomplishment to get a final round interview, no matter what you will be doing great things.

I don’t think there is a necessary correlation with your performance, it could just be the personal style of the interviewer.

Good luck!

Hi,

I was an interviewer at BCG for 5 years. Sometimes I took notes, sometimes I didnt. Neither of those meant anything in terms of how well you performed. Like other coaches have mentioned, this is a personal preference and not something you can decipher. So, don't worry about it :)

All the best!

As an interviewer I usually wouldn't take notes, as this intereferes with some candidates that are trying to take cues on their performance based on when I write.

Apparently, some candidates will try to take cues on “not writing” as well. :)

If I am a bit more tired, or won't be able to fill out the form right after the interview, I'll take notes. In that case, the notes I take can be positive or negative (or even unrelated, i.e., just writing the question I want to ask later). Basically, there's no reading into this.

Hello,

Don't worry about it - note-taking will depend on that specific interviewer's preferences and process. I wouldn't read into it as an indicator of your performance. Best of luck!

Don't worry about it. It is personal style and preferences of the interviewer - don't link it to your performance

Hi there,

Congrats on getting this far!

Don't read too much into this. Senior interviewers often don't take notes. They know already what to look for and usually make the decision on the spot in their mind.

Hope you hear from them soon!
Best,
Cristian

Hi,

Nothing to worry about. Most interviewers typically fill the feedback after they have conducted the interviews. Good luck. !
