Final round McKinsey reply

Good afternoon,

I applied for a particular job at McKinsey were they need people desperately and they have been having problems hiring.

I was told by one partner (before the interviews) that they really like my profile and they really want me on board.

Then I got really good feedback from my first round interviews. Just a few minor mistakes.

I just had my final round interviews. I did poorly on my first case interview with one partner from another practice (I got nervous). Then I did very well with the partner from the practice I would be joining.

Do you think this means I could still get the offer?

If not:

Is it possible to ask for a third final-round interview?

Is it possible to negotiate having interviews again in a short amount of time (not in a year but less)?

 Thank you  very much!

Hey there,

Straight to your questions:

1. Based on your own performance evaluation it sounds like a rejection is possible. You need to demonstrate a consistently strong performance in all interviews across all question types. If there were already some mistakes in round one and then one poor performance in the second round, it would be a rejection. Yet, often candidates do not have an accurate reflection of their own performance. I had people tell me that they bombed the case when they actually performed ‘’offer-worthy''.

Wait and see! :-)

2. No. If your performance was very strong but there are still doubts, they would run a bonus round and they would notify you on their end. Yet, this does not happen very often and the performance you mentioned would not qualify for that.

3. That could happen. If you are rejected but they a. have high demand and b. your performance was strong enough, the ban period might be reduced to 6 months. Talk to HR about your plan.

Fingers crossed for a positive outcome!

Cheers,

Florian

Hi,

It happens sometimes where your case performance isn't great. Don't be too hard on yourself about it. With regards to next steps, here is my advice :

  • NO one is a good judge of their interview performance, so wait till you actually hear back before deciding on how it went
  • If it is a high need role and you are a good fit, there is some more leeway to make on offer, however they will not lower their benchmark for you. What is most likely and something I have seen happen a few times is that they will ask you to either interview with a 3rd partner or ask you to prepare some more and re-interview in a few months
  • You cannot ask for an additional interview that is up to them

At this point your best bet is to be patient (very hard I know, we all hate uncertainty) and take the best next step only AFTER you hear back from them.

Best,

Udayan

Hi there,

It means you could still get the offer and it means you might not get the offer - we don't know!

If they really like you, it's possible that either your other performances were good enough to get you through, or they offer you a 3rd round themselves. If you really botched it, then you're likely to be rejected.

You may not ask for a 3rd round - that's up them.

You can't really negotiate having interviews again, but they may encourage you to re-apply in a shorter timeframe (i.e. 6 months).

Fingers crossed for you!

Hi there,

evaluation of case performance, to some degree, is subjective, so yes, there is still hope.

Is it possible to ask for a 3rd interview? No, not really. The firm on their end decides on the interview process and any deviations from standard procedure. A pro-active request will not yield anything.

Is it possible to negotiate reducing the black-out period? That really depends on how close you were and what the reasons for rejection were. I'd not really call it a negotiation though, as you don't really get to influence that decision too much.

Wish you all the best!

Cheers, Andi

You never know how you did until you hear back so I would ‘sit tight’ for the meantime.  I definitely wouldn't attempt any “negotiating" where I would just follow the next steps given.

Fingers crossed!
